The New York City Department of Education offers extremely competitive salaries to newly hired teachers. Since 2002, starting salaries for NYC public school teachers have increased 43%.

Salaries are based on prior teaching experience as well as your undergraduate and graduate education. having a masters doesn't make a person a master at teaching.. it means that u have obtained a certain number of credits beyond your college degree. american students are mediocre by international standards. teachers should be paid accordingly.

I really don't think our problem is overpaid teachers or overpaid mailmen. If you overpay someone who is incompetent or mediocre, you'll get it all back.

We're sitting at 16 trillion, maybe it's time to look for bigger fish to fry.

Teachers are paid according to what each local district decides. There are tens of thousands of school districts, and people decide where to live based on the quality of the education provided, or at least that's what they do where I live.
I live, because I have chosen to, in the district that is, as far as I know, the most expensive in NJ. I got what I paid for as far as my son's education is concerned, too.
Now, back to the point: anyone who comes up with the extraordinarily stupid argument that a programmer only makes 50k and will only make that 10 years from now, firstly, has no idea what he's talking about, and secondly, may himself be that programmer, in which case that person needs to find another career and stop being envious of the postman, for cryin' out loud. I mean, pathetic wouldn't begin to describe such a person.

students in your district may be better than average but they don't compare to the best korean or chinese students. you are fooling yourself if you think that you are getting your money's worth .it is a typical self serving illusion common to parents in the US that their kid's education is good but public education in general stinks.

I don't give a flying patootie what happens in China or Korea re education. Makes no difference at all in my life, and if their education is better than ours and it leads to me being able to buy better stuff, how is that something I'm supposed to be upset about? You guys go back and forth from one argument to the next without making any logical connection between them.
My arguments are very simple: the Post Office was considered a necessary part of a well-functioning government by the guys who actually set it up. It costs nothing in taxes despite the evidence-free statements made in this thread re that. Ergo, if they're in trouble and need some help from the Feds, we should be able to give that help, since self-evidently (to anyone but an ET poster, apparently) they cost less than any other agency of government in terms of taxpayer burden.
That's it. All this other stuff you guys bring in is so much irrelevant handwaving.
