US senator questions forcing food workers to wash hands

Did you guys read the article?

He's making an argument for less regulation, arguing that restaurants that did not require employees to wash hands would quickly go out of business (because any customer in their right mind would not go there), thereby letting capitalism work without government interference. He wasn't arguing that employees shouldn't have to wash their hands. It was an example of over regulation, even if a poor one.

Sheesh.

Actually he is arguing that restaurants should not be required to have facilities (bathrooms) that allow employees to wash their hands. He is arguing the restaurants should not have to provide soap so employees can wash their hands.

You do realize their is a reason the laws regarding restaurant employees washing their hands were put in place. There are reasons that restaurants are required to have bathrooms supplied with soap where employees can wash their hands.

Tillis (an idiot who destroyed North Carolina while in the state legislature) is making the argument that the restaurant would eventually go out of business, but it does not matter how many customers were sickened & hospitalized in the mean time. Tillis is the same clown who wanted to change the law in our state so restaurants did not have to report when an employee had Hepatitis A.

It is good to see that Tillis's stupidity has finally drawn national level attention. It only took mere weeks after he was elected as Senator. Here is my prediction, soon Tillis will be known for his gaffes and be regularly featured as idiot politician of the week in national media.

Again, I agree that the choice of example that he used was dumb, but I agree with the overall structure of the argument - government over regulation needs to be curbed to allow the free market system to take place. I also understand that you are from NC, and that you have a personal burr up your ass for the politicians of that state, and Tillis in particular. Have at them.

I guess it's a matter of degree, and tillis went too far. But i'll give another example.

Mcdonalds. At the local mcd near where I live, the cashier who handles the money and gives you your change also goes and gets the coffee you ordered. They fill up the coffee cup and then use their bare hands to put the lid on the cup, using their fingers to go around the top of the lid to clamp it down on the cup. This is with their bare hands and right after they've handled the money in the register and given you change.

I wouldn't want to try to get a law passed so they couldn't do this. I just will never buy their coffee. I think this is the idea tillis is talking about and he went overboard and used a bad example.

And Tillis still used the example despite being from a state that had large-scale Hepatitis A outbreaks due to infected workers in restaurants who probably failed to wash their hands. It demonstrates a complete lack of common sense and represents his continued failure to support basic public health.

At some point government regulation must end and societal norms take over. I'm ok with the legal requirement to provide washing facilities, but balk at laws requiring the actual washing. How is that supposed to be enforced?
