US Marshals arresting people for not paying their federal student loans

America's Abusive Debt Collectors

'“Every day I was on the job, I was asked to break the law,” says Moore. She primarily called debtors living in California, where strong consumer laws protect people from harassment. Yet when someone would hang up on her, “I would get direct orders to immediately call that person back”—and to keep calling until they talked. Federal law strictly forbids a debt collector from informing a third party—a close friend, a co-worker, even a parent—about a debt, but Moore’s bosses told her to ignore that, too. “When we couldn’t reach someone, we were instructed to contact a neighbor and ask them to pin a note to a person’s front door, saying to call us because they owe us this money,” says Moore. The collectors were even ordered to phone people’s relatives to try to enlist them in the cause. “Those who didn’t like it were told, ‘You’ll do what it takes or you’ll find another job.’?”'

DO YOU REALLY WANT TO GIVE THESE SCAM ARTISTS THE ABILITY TO LOCK UP PEOPLE IN JAIL?

I don't see any legit links to the original thread topic and now this thread has quickly gone toward debt collection which is far different than US Marshalls. Debtor jails have not been around since the 1800s. US Marshalls only serve people for court dates, evictions, bankruptcy etc. They do not arrest nor do they bounty hunt for debt collectors (bounty hunters work in the criminal law area, debts are civil law). They would arrest someone, however, if that person answered the door with a weapon or threat.

Did you read the original article... Federal Marshals are dragging people out of their homes to jail in order to appear in front of a court to sign repayment plans.

Lawsuits against debt collectors have gotten up to $60,000 to my knowledge. You just have to document all the calls, easily done with phone records afaik. If you don't want to sue the collectors you can request that the collector prove that they properly own the debt. They never bother and that results in removal from your record. In California you can give them a time and day to call and they are in trouble if they don't adhere so tell them "Thursdays between 11:27am and 11:34am" or some such and never answer the phone at that time.

The student loan thing is awful though... totalitarian government locking people up and keeping them. Also royally hasseling innocent people. Goddam progressives are totalitarians to the core. Never let them on your property or in your house without a warrant. They can come in under guise of helping or being a nurse or whatever then find any excuse at all, a supplement that Big Pharma doesn't like, dirty floors, etc. and take away children or old people or about anybody they want. They get Federal money for everybody they kidnap. If you tell them to get a warrant they rarely return because they don't have the legal standing, just anonymous complaints typically... Educate yourself to what bureaucrats can do to people https://www.facebook.com/A-Miracle-For-Two-Sisters-327945754051748/?fref=nf

its a shame its come to that... but I think you are correct. its best not to let anyone from the govt in your house.

But, let me also say that some of those who do hospice work are some of the few who really can claim to be doing God's work. I can't believe how selfless some of those people are.

So, it's progressives that fill debtor's prisons??

Did you read the original article... Federal Marshals are dragging people out of their homes to jail in order to appear in front of a court to sign repayment plans.

He was arrested for failing to appear.

From Washington Post...

But the story is a bit more complex. According to the U.S. Marshals Service, agents had made several attempts to serve Aker an order to appear in federal court, dating to 2012.

“Marshals spoke with Aker by phone and requested he appear in court, but Aker refused,” the U.S. Marshals Service said in a statement. “A federal judge then issued a warrant for Aker’s arrest for failing to appear at a December 14, 2012, hearing.”

yea, that doesn't even completely jive but its getting much closer to the actual story. A student loan debt is a civil suit. If you do not show up to court in a civil suit, they adjudicate against you and in favor of the debt collector. The debt collector is then required to attach or seize assets to cover the debt. Most student loans in default are repaid by salary garnishment, tax return garnishment..possibly savings garnishment.

If he was arrested for failing to appear, there must have been a criminal complaint linked to this case.

and when I mentioned legit links in my earlier post, I saw many links, but none I would put any value in. I saw a Wash Times link but not Post. But in this age I don't really believe even main stream press unless I get several links from mainstream press of different political persuasions.
