Unemployment Benefits Aren't Stimulus

Quote from Anaconda:

I understand the rhetoric against unemployment benefits and I do not exactly disagree. But do any of you realize that unemployment insurance keeps the population docile?

+1

Anyone here remember the 1977 NYC blackout?

The grid is already stressed add a financial picture as bleak as the 70's were and it could be a real mess...

Quote from pspr:

To extend unemployment benefits something else needs to be cut. This spend spend spend, give away give away give away has to stop. The U.S. is broke and so am I.

Agree that it should be that it should be time limited. However, there need to be workfare or some other help for those not longer eligible for unemployment benefits and still cannot find work.

Many people stop looking after over 1000 applications. Some will never see a decent job again due to age or gap in profession.

Besides government jobs and Wall Street, many rank and file workers end up in poverty begging for jobs with slavery wages.

There are employed low-wage workers living in their vans/cars here in So Cal. Not all are fortunate enough to live with mom and dad or getting other benefits that help them.

Quote from hippie:

An old friend of mine is talking about suicide. He lost his job of 20 years early last year. His unemployment extension was halted. The guy is fearful of homelessness and have too much ego to turn to his more successful siblings for help. He is in his 50's.

Well I wasn't really hinting at suicide. I'm talking about riots, looting, stick-ups, home burglaries and robberies.

Quote from SCI new york:

A lot of unemployed aren't even looking for jobs BECAUSE of the unemployment benefits. "free" money for them while they search for that 100k+ salary job that they feel entitled to. Instead of being lazy cunts they should go out, swallow their pride and get a job that will at least bring in some income. Plenty of jobs out there, its america. Problem isn't the job market, the problem is the people. People thing because they have a college degree from super duper university that they somehow are supposed to have a job that pays 200k and allows them to sit in a chair and just sign their name on paperwork.

I think they should cut off unemployment benefits after a certain amount of time, force people to go out and find some kind of job.

Well its only fair if you have 200k in debt? People keep talking about how lazy new generation is and they worked 15k a year jobs in 1980 but they dont realize in 1980 houses were like 30k now houses are like 400k and salaries are only 50k. So buying power actually waned, also student debts are much bigger. Plus you might say people working at pizza hut thats good no its not, nowadays most big firm employers will not hire you exactly because you took a job below your standard. It must mean you weren't good enough to be hired for your standard.:(

F^&k, homelessness is fun if you are in the right area. Make a sign saying "sick lame lazy" and hold it all day, collect some coin, get a bottle and some toke and go hang in an encampment....... you don't have the choicest of women but otherwise it's cool. Suicide!! What a proud moron your friend is, what's his name, ChickenDick or something?

Quote from failed_trad3r:

tax cuts lead to speculation and hyperinflation:(

Are you one of the thugs in President obama's Justice Department that does not understand the economy or anything else besides being a thug.

Sorry, no disrespect to you opinion, but that is outright stupid.

Quote from TGregg:

Really? So if there are so many jobs that only one loser doesn't have one, then we hand out 80 year unemployment benefits with a max per year of $2 million, you think everyone will still be employed?

first of all, your example has nothing to do with reality. Really stupid example, ranking among the most stupid I have seen here on ET.

second, your "if there are so many jobs out there" reflects you did not understand my post.

third, you should read the entire post, which said "assuming not Full employment"

fourth, sorry to step on on your toes in your hope that you will qualify for extended unemployment benefits while you learn to trade. Obviously, it hit a nerve...

other than that, you are right on.

seriously, understand what is said before pretending to have something to say

Unemployment insurance should be capped at 20 grand per year, with a 5K stipend per dependent. The benefit period should be capped at 12 months, unless it's a national emergency (Depression).

There are menial jobs to be had, and plenty of illegals to deport.

Accountability is what makes our system work. Take that away, and nobody cares that Government outsourced jobs to Chindia, that Wallstreet blew a catastrophic bubble, that their credit cards are maxed out, and they took a mortgage and car loan they couldn't afford.

People have to suffer the financial consequences of their actions.

The best remedy for the over-extended is liquidation. My 2 cents.

What happened to his home equity, IRA, savings account, car(s) and other assets that could be liquidated ?
