This is a grossly misinterpreted passage of Jefferson's. He wrote this to comfort the Baptists that the federal government would not establish a National Denomination. I believe the Baptists were afraid that the Congregationalists would be established as a sort of "Church of England".
Point of fact: every state (or close to it) shortly thereafter established a state denomination. Always remember that the founders pushed freedom of religion not freedom from religion.

You use an example of one founding father to make a generalization of what the other founding father's ideas were?
Read the Declaration of Independence, it properly reflects the thoughts of our founding fathers....
