They were the enemy for a long time, and they weren't averse to committing atrocities. Indigenous People's Day is a woke holiday made up by those who hate the legacy of Columbus.
Indigenous People's Day was here before the word "woke" when it was just a state holiday in South Dakota back in 1990 under a
Republican governor George S. Mickelson.
No atrocities by the Indigenous People equate to the devastation against Indigenous People after Columbus...a loss of 95% of the Indigenous population.
Columbus Day to Indigenous People is a celebration of invasion, theft, brutality, and colonization. Regardless, it's
not a national holiday under U.S. federal law just like many other ethnic holidays (e.g. German American Day for people of German Heritage).
In 1983, President Ronald Reagan (a Republican) proclaimed October 6 as German-American Day to celebrate and the 300th anniversary of German immigration to and culture in the United States. On August 6, 1987, Congress approved S.J. Resolution 108, designating October 6, 1987, as German-American Day.
German-Americans make up the largest self-reported ancestry group within the United States accounting for roughly 49 million people and approximately 17% of the population of the United States.
That would be a much bigger WOKE to you...right???
In contrast, there are
over six million Native Americans in the United States, 78% of whom live outside reservations. The states with the highest percentage of Native Americans in the U.S. are Alaska, Oklahoma, New Mexico, South Dakota, Montana, and North Dakota...
All the above-listed states are
Republican states with Republican governors except for one (governor of New Mexico) that celebrates with Indigenous Americans.
Indigenous Peoples Day is a day to celebrate what little remains for those
(+6.79 million) who are Indigenous Americans (like me)...for us (not you) to get together and celebrate our heritage.
The +6.79 million Indigenous Americans is about 2.09% of the entire U.S. population.
Therefore, Indigenous Peoples holiday for those of Indigenous American heritage has no impact on you...no more than you're offended by what you would call the
"woke" of German American holiday for those of German American heritage
or St. Patrick's Day (Irish American holiday) for those of Irish American heritage.
