Indeed. What I took from it is that Vance wants to be part of the old money elite but can't be because he wasn't born to it. In that sense he's soul mate to Trump.

Edit: credit to your "best lapdog" hypothesis, though, it's quite plausible.

I agree. My critique of him as the choice is simply trying to apply logic. He is accomplished, qualified enough to satisfy the basic duties of the job, can be accepted to step up to the top slot if the need arises, all while posing no threat to Trump himself.
