I think when China achieves that milestone it will be from the indirect help by the United States. Saw a recent documentary about how China, North Korea and Russia have grown in strength (technology, military) since Trump took office.

The last 30 years the US has made the Chinese economy much stronger. All Americans from all political sides prefered to buy cheap goods from China instead of US made goods.
Us companies outsourced their production and helped the Chinese to become bigger than the US. And Americans buy massively these products made in China.
So not the Democrats, but the US population is guilty for what happened.

The push for globalization among all the elites in Washington started in the very early 1990's. It was a strongly held universal dogma on both sides of the aisle. Every economist of note clamored for it. Offshoring all those jobs to China would force that Country to become a free and open society like the West - or so the narrative went. Private equity firms, management consulting firms, and corporations became insanely rich offshoring jobs. IT support and Software jobs were touted as the new economy for those displaced manufacturing jobs - that is, until those jobs also got offshored to places like India. If someone overseas could do it cheaper - slash and burn.
And the carnage left behind was never addressed by either political party.

And now what's happening is that those societies still remained oppressed and closed but richer and are now better able to impose their own ideologies onto us to turn us slowly into oppressed and closed societies just like them. LOL So now we are not only losing our way of thinking, we are also becoming poorer at the same time.
I think the problem is we in the West are just too short-sighted. All we do is concentrate on the short-term gain, using the method that can give us the best result NOW instead of having a comprehensive, coherent long-term plan. I would say majority of the times, the method that gives the best short-term results is not always the best method long-term. With globalization, yeah sure you decrease cost of production now and make higher profit now but what about the long-term effects? How was this decreased cost of production achieved? It wasn't with supposedly higher productivity; it was actually achieved with child labour, inhumanely long working hours and substandard working conditions which once they were improved still added to higher cost. And you also have to deal with forced technology transfer and technology theft which means you lose even your revenue-producing niche and edge. So you end up not only have to deal with the increased cost of production but also decreased revenue, losing at both ends. If you really want to decrease cost and make more $$, the long-term solution would be to develop artificial intelligence aka robotics to increase productivity. The ultimate highest productivity is never achieved with human labour, it's with machines. Humans will never be able to compete with machines. If we had started to develop robotics long time and started to use robotics on a more massive scale instead of globalization we would've been lot further ahead, lot richer, lot more able to even "free the world" as what we wanted to achieve in the first place. We would've even be able to preserve our revenue-producing capability by eliminating or at least reducing many of the problems that we encountered such as forced technology transfer and technology theft.
But robotics technology takes a long time to develop and perfect to the point of being able to be fully implemented into production to the point of completely taking over production to achieve the level of productivity that we need to be competitive. And that means in the short term, our economic growth would be slow and we would be poor but we would have to work harder. Is that the kind of pain that we are prepared to endure in order to achieve long-term productivity increase leading to once again economic dominance? If yes, right now is not too late.
Trump's strategies is starting us off at the right direction. Leveling the playing field in trade agreements to increase financial capital. Now the next step is to invest in and develop robotic technology. And the third step is transitioning into production with fully robotic technology from human production. This is the hardest part which would require a lot of coordination and co-operation to ensure the transition is a smooth one and least damaging one on societal and psychological well-being.
Bottom Line: Let's concentrate on getting back on our feet first. It's unacceptable that cities in America declare bankruptcy and with no infrastructure. It's unacceptable that people who used to be middle class now can only afford to live in their vans in Walmart's parking lots. Young people who make six-figure income choose to live in their trucks and take shower in YMCA. It's unacceptable that we pay so high of school taxes and yet we still have to pay more to send kids to private schools or even homeschool them when it's time for them to learn. It's unacceptable that people can't even afford the medical treatments that they need to feel better. Start to solve these problems first. These people are human too and they also should have the human rights of decent living, to be free of economic hardship. And then think about changing the world, making other societies "free". And you never know, maybe without us doing anything, other societies might become freer than ours.
