US has had tariffs on goods for ages. Are you illiterate or just playing dumb? Obama created multiple tariffs as have all the other presidents. Negligible benefits if any, more typically harmful.
After the second World War, competing economies were destroyed and obviously the US was a big proponent of free trade as it would benefit them. As the tables turned, suddenly this system was a problem.

The US at a huge cost of tens of billions bailed out Germany and Japan and helped their reconstruction! US was not even at war until Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in a pre-emptive attack! Atleast, President Trump has reduced corporate and individual tax rates, reduced burdensome regulations, signed trade agreement with Vietnam, got a $250 billion order for arms from Saudi Arabia among other things! In addition, President Trump is respected the world over more than President Obama ever was! Obama was snubbed by Raul Castro, sending an underling to meet him at the airport in Havana! Saudis rolled out the red carpet for Trump, Obama bowed to the Saudi King!

If you would be objective you would also mention that at that moment the US and Russia were enemies. The US was afraid that Russia would control entire Europe. So to protect the US against Russia, the US started the Marshall plan. If Europe would be controlled by Russia, the US would have a huge problem. Russia would be the worldpower and not the US.
Harry Truman introduced the word "containment" and gave help to non communistic countries because of the threat of Russia. Russia even tried to block the Marshallplan.
Also don't forget the business opportunities for US companies at that time. The Marshallplan created a lot of export countries for US products.
So don't pretend as it was all charity. It had everything to do with economics, politics and strategic warfare. It was a win-win operation for EU and USA.
US and Russia were not enemies. They were allies. The US was leery of Russia to be sure. However, you also, failed to mention that the US aided Russia in the war against Germany, sending tanks, howitzers and other arms to enable the Russians to keep Germany at bay! More likely, there was competition but, Europe was partitioned with Eastern Europe being part of those countries under Russia! West Germany under the US side. As to whether the Marshall Plan benefitted the US, that is subject to debate. Those tens of billions could have been spent developing US industries in the US! Of course, we will never know because that was not the course taken!
