I don't know. I am only certain that Trump's unilateral approach and 1920s style tariffs will fail even though they will be promoted by the White House as a great success. The right approach requires first forming a coherent, multilateral collective of allies. Then great skill and insight on the part of negotiators is needed to negotiate a win win improvement in the trade relationship between China and the West. We are fooling ourselves to think that China needs us or that they will respond positively to bullying. False pride is a dangerous thing. We are no longer living in President McKinley's world.OK, Orange Man Bad. I hear you and I take your point. So I'll ask once again. What would be “the right way” ? I’m quite curious. Don’t say: “file a case with WTO” because despite its membership obviously China blatantly ignores WTO rules and rulings.
The only thing I can be absolutely certain of is that little good can come from an administration led by a sociopathic, narcissistic president, other than by blind luck of course. Consequently all our energies should be devoted to removing him from office by whatever means. Serious negotiations on any matter should be delayed until that is accomplished. That means , most likely, that every thing must be on hold until late January 2021.
