strategy to consider is to buy SPY put options a month out and 5% below where the market is trading whenever the index breaks the 200 day or 100 day moving averages. For example on Thursday the SPY ended the day at 389.63. The $370 put for Jan 20 was roughly $3.80. I don’t hold these puts into expiry. Instead I trade them every time I can earn $1.00 or more above what I paid.

If the market fails to fall then I usually sell SPY put options $10 to $15 below the long put strike. For example I buy the $370 for Jan 20 expiry and the SPY is at $380 by the end of December. I sell some put options for Jan 20 at the $360 or $355 put strike to help recover some of the loss the trade is taking.
