what else, from my experience NYC cab drivers weren't too fresh or knowledgable either, you need to be in London to get good cabbies but then they study "The Knowledge" for years. I used quite a few cabs when I was out there in April and had good experiences, it's luck of the draw.

I entirely agree it's not an environmentally sound place - running a ski slope in the desert wasn't really going to be was it! But maybe america should clean up their own back yard on that front before pointing the finger elsewhere

It's not cheap either electricals cost less elesewhere and you have to pay your year's rent up front in general (about GBP£1200 a month for 1 bed ~900sq ft in a decent area). However, if you're trading european markets and getting paid in euros/sterling then the low dollar tie makes it better. It might not be cheaper than the US but the US is much cheaper than London

To sum up it is horses for courses and if it's your first move to a country outside your own you're bound to be shocked it's never going to be like back home but then again maybe you'll appreciate it all the more when you return. Try working in Saudi and you'll think Dubai is paradise.

You'd have many same gripes from someone living in China but I'd still love to live there for a year or two. But even a western man with hair on his legs gets shouted "monkey man" at down the street there! :D

Hi guys,

How are Dubai laws concerning Gambling? Is Gambling legal. Is it legal to place bet thrugh website like Ladbrokes, choice odds and the likes. How about internet connoction speed.

Anybody seriously considering moving to Dubai or any other Arab country needs to get examined! Their are few civil liberties for most of the population. As a foreigner, you can count no rights, heavy discrimination and constant suspicion.
As for the woman, Arabs do not accept women as equals, and most of them will not speak to them, let alone do business with them.
Bottom line: head to Thailand! Better beaches, better nightlife, country has been Americanized.
 
I just wanted to state that I met a fellow trader in Chicago back around 2000. He is Iranian and I have to say that to this day I have no closer friend than he. I consider him my brother. We are different in so many aspects. I listen to what he says and he listens to what I say.

We have mutual respect to not dictate who is right or wrong about anything. He has changed my mind on many things, as I am sure I have changed his thinking also.

The one thing that ties us together is the passion we both have for trading. We are both dedicated beyond what any normal person would ever commit to trading. Its not money that drives us both its the knowledge that we posses that drives us.

I think that the time is coming fast when smart people are finding smart people who share a passion and race, religion, etc. don't matter near as much as "the game” we are sportsmen with a kindred sprit.

that's maybe what Arab contries don't want.. then it explains all you said about them.. just think how you would react if China was tring to "chinized" USA.. I think that if you respect them and have some unusual humility it will help you a lot.

Get a grip. Arab countries obviously don't want Americanization, and look at what it is doing to them and to the world. Extremist dictators and fundamentalists, countries with absolutely no economy and not even third world facilities. Whenthe oil boom is over these countries will go back to the dark ages because they refuse to be Americanized. You also don't understand that they resist all things American because they hate America and want the rest of the world to join their religion and way of life.
Regarding "unusual humility" (whatever that means) and your political misunderstandings, this is a thread regarding the pros and cons of going there, not the ramifications of globalization.
Do you understand what you read?

Well it's nice to have both views of the picture. Obviously you show the other side.

My general point is that Dubai gets blown up to be this amazing place, when there are plenty of destinations that are much better. Short of trying to grab some economic opportunity (like real estate), I really do not see any reason to move to Dubai.

Other interesting things about Dubai, you pay rent annually. So you have to cough up 10s of thousands of dollars to move in.

Comparing it to the rest of Middle East does not make sense. Middle East is not exactly a travel or expat destination, far from it.
