Well, women come in a wide variety of types, but yeah, as a group, they tend not to be well-off as men overall. No need to debate why, there's a vast range of theories and blame to go around.
However, I do believe that the majority of differences between men and women comes down to reproduction and the mating game. Despite our "civilized" and socialized selves, the primal animal and survival instincts are strong within us. While the desire may be the same, what it takes for a woman to successfully pass on a single copy of her genes is completely different than it takes for a guy to do so.
Up until very recently, and still true in a large portion of the world, women are very vulnerable and dependent for large portions of their lives when they're pregnant and have young kids. Having a mate that's got resources, power, protection, dedication and commitment to her is vitally important. The subconcious traits that turn women on and "attracts" her communicate a lot of these cues across.
Having a certain level of resources (money, food, shelter, protection, education, etc), will better guarantee the survival of her kids than living in scarcity. When you're pregnant with 2-3 kids hanging off you, it's darn difficult to go work a decent job to provide those things for your family. The quality of education of the US's public schools have been dropping tremendously compared Europe and Asia. To really educate your kids well, it's gonna cost you some serious dough.
For a guy on the other hand, to pass on a copy of his genes is darn easy. Just spread your seed around to as many women as possible and that's the best strategy.
