Bullshit. Nothing "proved" their faith. They chose to accept some ludicrous explanation rather than the more likely and real explanation.

does it matter to you if its real or just superstition based on emotion?

most of us want something to be based on fact before we use it as a crutch and since all the evidence says its not real what would be the point to someone who does not believe based on all of the evidence available to him?

according to christian religion the most important requirement is that you "believe". if the evidence forces you not to believe you are in a no win situation. you could try to fake it but i am sure any deity with the power to send people to hell could see through that. unless your god is willing to provide mankind with more evidence i submit he wants to send people to your hell.
try an experiment. try to force yourself to believe santa claus exists. it was easy when you were a child and didnt have knowledge. now that you have seen the truth i challenge you to force yourself to believe santa clause really exists. it cant be done.
