Tight Stops

Hey Cutten! Did you like my GOOG swing call?
I didn't even use anywhere near 6T stops today. I usually use 3-4T max, 6T is emergency stop for me (on ES). I usually try to get out before it even gets there though. It either goes for me straight away, or it doesn't. Obviously, on ER2 or DAX things are a little wider.
I spent my first day in Bryce's group today... 53 people there. It's been my first day on the ES in a while, but I pulled nearly 300% of the daily range off the ES, with over 170% in the last 1.5 hours, posted live and at the fact, and no tick trades, all 2.00pts or more, day total +15.25pts. Another guy just PM'ed me saying he took 12pts, so I certainly wasn't the only one seeing opportunity traversing this lovely range.
Right now, I'm totally buried in emails from people, it's crazy. Should have never given a pop email there.
Was an interesting day though, got into some private chats, there truly are some GREAT people in that group, and I think that's unique. Surprisingly enough, Bryce is actually a nice guy, I think he just got a bit pissed off with the ET attitude (no surprise here). He looks at the right kind of things though, and no doubt I found a good player to take on for a challenge. Actually, I'm glad I did. This is gonna be an interesting learning experience.
All that notwithstanding, I think Bryce is gonna have a tough time at the challenge, any way you slice it...

Yes, I agree, PPP has probably the most stupid name on ET, and incidentally his post history shows that his mindscape is much the same. Still, we have to accept people the way they are. We can't change others, they can only change themselves.
Ideally, we should be compassionate towards everybody, as at the end of the day, all humans just want to be loved and understood. Even PPP does. I think that continuous malevolence and flaming does nothing to better the productivity or mood in this place, so why bother?
You're better off doing what you're good at. You obviously are good at a few things. Stick with 'em. Forget ET. Steve was right.
Anyway, enough of that. And you don't understimate yours, either! Enjoy your day, I need some sleep now.

Hi Scientist. I've actually just got back from a short holiday, so missed your GOOG call I'm afraid.
My opinion on stops - for scalps, 1 point; for trying to catch a clear intraday trend, 1.5-2 points. For a trailing stop during a strong intraday trend - 3 points max.
For overnight stuff I prefer 10 points stop on entry, going out to 15-20 points for a trailing stop.
These aren't pulled out of thin air. All anyone needs to do is look back at ES data for the last year or so (for overnights; last few months will do for daytrading), and work out what size stop would have been big enough to avoid the noise on the various timeframes, yet small enough to avoid serious loss or excessive erosion of profits.
You want to find something that would have allowed you to capture the bulk of most trends that you could identify. Look at what would have worked, then add a portion to that value in order to avoid over-optimisation and make the stop more robust.
Obviously there are other factors e.g. the current risk/reward, the market action, support/resistance etc. But looking at prior maximum pullbacks is a good starting point for determining the maximum size of your stop.

FYI ppp is the heroic figure of a much loved "story", typically learned in basic training. And yeah, I agree I could have found a more palatable nick.
