This Ted Cruz is a flat out wackjob

You may want to reconsider your basing your opinion of Cruz on my opinion of the Federal Reserve. That seems a bit screwy to me. Nevertheless you get to vote. I suppose that is the beauty of the few vestiges of democracy existing at the federal level. If you live in the wrong State your vote may not count, but you can always hope.

I don't base my opinion of Cruz on your opinion (and incessant cheerleading) of the Fed. Your views on the Cruz strengthens my position on Cruz, that's all.

So if returning to a gold standard "raises his stock even more" in your opinion, why challenge that he said he wanted it? You should have cheered it.

Because I never heard him say it, and it's not listed in his platform anywhere that I've seen. And you've been known to say things sometimes that cannot be proven. That's all.

All he has on his website is regarding this is:

A rules-based monetary system would restore stability to the dollar and to the international currency system. This will help us get beyond these cycles of boom, bust, and malaise, and return us to rising productivity, strong economic growth, and higher incomes for all.

Weird. I didn't see that in the debate when I saw it, and I don't see it mentioned anywhere on his platform. Nor has he mentioned it anywhere else other than this supposed quote.

I'm assuming you have a linked transcript and didn't just make that up.

Edit, I guess he must have mentioned it. That raises his stock even more in my book - though I think he was more advocating a return to sound money (something we sorely lack).

Here's the write up by Forbes.

The right predominantly supports, or at least appreciates, the gold standard. In addition to Ted Cruz’s direct advocacy presidential contenders Donald Trump, Rand Paul, Ben Carson and Mike Huckabee have made sympathetic statements. Jeb Bush has professed open-mindedness.
If anyone thought for one moment about what a gold standard would mean they'd run like hell from it. The buying power of your currency would YoYo up and down like crazy! The only reason the gold standard worked was its constant price guaranteed by the U.S. Treasury. That became untenable when the treasury was redeeming currency backed by gold at 35$/Oz. while elsewhere gold was selling for 40$/Oz. THAT is why we went off the gold standard.

Keynes knew a gold standard couldn't be maintained indefinitely and that's why, at Bretton Woods, he proposed an alternative that would have lasted and would have worked. I am always suspicious of the reasoning power of anyone today who might suggest going back to a gold standard. It is especially scary to find this kind of weak thinking in politicians, but I am not surprised at all to find it on ET where it is relatively harmless..

You'll excuse me if I ignore pretty much everything you (and Keynes) suggest economically. Thanks.

Even finding any connection at all is bizarre.

Bizarre how? Cruz (and many other candidates and conservatives) consider Fed policies to have run amok. You cheer them. Why is it so hard to see how you not liking a candidate would mean those of the opposite view would find those candidates even more appealing? Are your deductive reasoning skills as "sharp" as your economic ones?

Many of my responses to you are actually intended for others whose reasoning powers are perhaps somewhat beyond your own. I hope you will excuse me for using you in this way.

Cruz is a nut job, an extremely smart nut job, the most dangerous kind. Unfortunately the natural constituency of the Republican party is far too small in numbers to elect anyone, so they have had to give out way too many free tickets to Joe the plumber, his buddies, and all the many and diverse evangelical crackpots, to be able to fill all the empty seats under their circus tent. Now, of course they are reaping what they have sowed, and it is comical to see that they don't like the wild nut grass that's springing up everywhere. They have reached the point where if a stable, qualified candidate made it all the way through their primary process, it could be regarded as a miracle.

The Democrats too have given out some extra tickets to their circus tent, but only a few for the last few rows of the upper deck, far from the center ring, were available. The Republicans have worked tirelessly, but unwittingly of course, these past 35 years to help the Democrats grow their natural constituency. The Democrats should be very grateful to the Republicans. Thanks to those Republican efforts, the sane and stable constituency of the Democrats is now much larger than the Republican's. The Democrats now have a tremendous advantage in National elections.

Seriously? Are you reduced to trolling now? You can't actually believe this.

We have just witnessed the spectacle of the two democrat contenders, one an elderly socialist/marxist, the other a notoriously dishonest shrew, vying to say who would be the most aggressive in ignoring US immigration law and allowing any and all who invade our country to remain. It was so extreme even the Washington Post called them out. Then there is the unseemly begging for the endorsement of race hustler Al Sharpton. Say what you will about former klansman David Duke, but he never fomented a riot that got several people killed or encouraged anti-Semitic violence that resulted in a young jewish man being stabbed to death. Sharpton did.

Any advantage the democrats have in national elections is the result of half the country living parasitically off the rest of us.

Democrats have not won a majority of white votes in 50 years. They achieved a plurality once in that period when a third party candidate split the white vote. They do even less well with white men. They are the party of extremists, wackos, leeches and thugs.

Says the guy who had never heard of Jim Grant, and thought the GM bailout made money, that Japan is on the right track, etc...
