Simply for failure to clear brush from around the towers and along the transmission lines, something that was done routinely in California all of my life until about a decade or so ago. They literally stopped clearing the fire breaks and stopped clearing the chaparral underneath the lines. Its incomprehensible. Cutting power is irresponsible.

California is liberal. They will, generally, always elect a real leftist to be Governor. But they also have a reputation for ejecting an incompetent Governor from office regardless of who might replace them. I really hope Gavin Newsom gets the Gray Davis treatment. I'm betting there are 800,000 people without power who would sign the recall petition that is circulating.

As for needing electricity to pump gas from an underground tank? Ever hear of a hand-cranked siphon?
