INDEPENDENT RESEARCH

Stocks are resting on this first day of the new trading week. Lack luster earnings news and absent economic reports have shares trading slightly negative midway through the session. The market has experienced a huge run up in price therefore a bit of a pull back is to be expected. However, it may be a substantial drop. If you look at the VIX futures, they are indicating a 68% chance that the S&P 500 will move as much as 7.2% over the next 30 days, per the analysts at Bloomberg. This is determined by the spread between the futures and the index which is the widest since August 2008, right before the big drop in September/October 2008. Fundamentally things look positive, but these underlying technical signs can be interpreted as grim. Will the positive fundamental changes counteract the traditional signs of an impending drop?

The respected head of Templeton Asset Management, Mark Mobius, made the dire prediction of an imminent 30% decline in global stocks today. This highly negative sentiment combined with the VIX future spread signaling a sharp increase by the historically bearish September/October time frame sent shares lower on the session. The DJIA ended down 32.12 after trading lower on the day, the Nasdaq fell 8.01 and the broad based S&P 500 gave back 3.38.
