John would rather take the quick few days trade, get 10 points on $20MM position, vs. 100 points with $1MM position over 6 months.

John would rather make $5MM on a 10% ytd gain, vs. $500k on a 100% ytd gain.

<i>"First, Trend Following by definition is buying/selling new highs/lows, the high/low tick if you will, expecting additional moves in the same direction. "</i>

Whose definition is that? Surf, sounds like you've immersed yourself in turtle soup too long. That stuff is rancid, aged and inedible. Throw it out before the mold spreads thru your 'fridge.

I'm a trend follower. When an intraday trend confirms via the standards I define a trend by, that direction is followed on pullbacks. I don't trade high - low ticks, but I follow trends.

My defined trends last anywhere from minutes to hours in duration. What happens on any basis longer than intraday is of little relevance to me.

Careful how tightly you try to pigeonhole trend following. It is best defined by any attempt to trade in harmony with prevailing market direction, relative to time horizon. Traders have been taking pullbacks in harmony with trends before either of us were born, let alone before investigative journalists (aka non-traders) wrote novels titled as such.

I don't disagree with this part of the equation.

In fact, I agree 100% :) .

Good trading,

OK surf,
I think we can summarize your views :

Trend Drift TM = Real, true thing, actually exists

TREND FOLLOWING and TREND = Not real, false, does not exist

Quote from JimmyJam:
.., a "nice loss" ..

Quote from nkhoi:

I think "nice loss" also deserves TM

...LOL...
ha ha ha .... 2 New terms created at ET:

1) Trend Drift TM (not to be confused with Trend Following)

and also:

2) "nice loss" TM (not to be confused with Bad Loss)

That's a classic technique used by many intra-day traders to create consistent profits, however what Surf is talking about is capturing the whole-of-the-trend, not its parts.

This means ignoring the minor ripples of price action in an attempt to catch its entire wave.

Good trading,

JJ

Quote from marketsurfer:

well, mr. dog, thank you for the questions. however, you are confusing specifics with generalities with my statements. First, Trend Following by definition is buying/selling new highs/lows, the high/low tick if you will, expecting additional moves in the same direction. you or anyone making up a definition differing from the accepted definition does not change the facts. "boneheads" your word, is only knowable in hindsight. those who bought the perceived "top tick" through the year long rally were heroes, not boneheads. remember, top tick, is relative until one enters or the drift actually changes-- it is also only viewable in hindsight.

i am not a trend follower, but rather a trend anticipator. followers get slaughtered again and again, as we witness the stumbling public who by default are trend followers. anticipators, on the other hand, are the actual participants of speculation---- the individuals, the frontline, the risk takers who reap the spoils, freely given by the misguided and confused trend FOLLOWERS.

i do not have an aversion to heat, but rather embrace it as a necessary step in trend anticipation.

regards,

surf

Only you, living off the high of annaland, a world of ecstasy, could make these baloney posts and get them ET-trademarked!

You sure know how to combine those backrooms, their harvests and the 17 minute silent treatment; while still letting the old Jewish man indulge in his cheese…must it always be about food?

Could it be that you finally see the way surf talks from both sides of his mouth and employs Situational Semantics TM as the need arises? Does that mean that you read my post, which identified his contradictory comments, and then observed him spin his semantic web and excrete the obligatory defensive ooze which enables him to become sufficiently slippery (or so he thinks) to ostensibly extricate himself from the corners he habitually paints himself into? Could it be?
