US Infrastructure Investment: Betrayed by GOP Tax Reform?

The Market Mogul‎ - 19 Dec 2017

But for those who still recall, the idea was to encourage US corporations, who collectively owe an estimated $2.5trn in deferred taxes on overseas activities, to repatriate their profits. From the taxes paid on this, the idea was to attract $1trn for investment in the equity of infrastructure projects over the next 10 ...

US infrastructure Trump

According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, US infrastructure is in dire condition. The ASCE gave a D+ in its most recent report card. The report card, broken into sections, analyses aviation (D), bridges (C+), dams (D), drinking water (D), energy (D+), hazardous waste (D+), inland waterways (D), levees (D), parks and recreation (D+), ports (C+), railways (B), roads (D), schools (D+), solid waste (C), public transit (D-) and wastewater (D+) resources.

Consequently, President Trump has proposed $1trn in infrastructure spending to address this issue. However, more government funding is not a sustainable solution. Even as state governments continue to increase funding for infrastructure, the situation has gone from bad to worse. The only solution is to privatise America’s entire infrastructure network – from airports to road and highways. "

" Here's How Much Australia's Infrastructure Is Worth Compared To Other Countries

All in all, the report pegs the value of those physical assets -- computed for 32 of the top-spending countries -- at a whopping $US218 trillion worldwide. So how do these countries compare? In terms of straight value, the US has been eclipsed by China over the past two years:

While Arcadis points out that Qatar bowls every other country over when you look at it per capita value, that's pretty unsurprising for a small country investing massively in its cities and infrastructure. By that metric, Australia is only five places behind:

Pentagon Reportedly Weighing Using Nukes In Response To 'Large Cyberattacks’

Draft nuclear strategy says the U.S. could respond to certain “non-nuclear attacks” with nuclear weapons.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au/20...berattacks_a_23336381/?utm_hp_ref=au-homepage

Though the U.S. has yet to experience a truly catastrophic cyberattack, such a strike could have devastating impacts — including the destruction of a country’s infrastructure.

The massive “WannaCry” cyberattack last year, which was blamed on North Korea, impacted more than 230,000 computers in 150 countries across the globe. Banks and universities were shut down because of the attack. In the U.K., hospitals were forced to shutter wards and emergency rooms.

China, Russia and Iran have also recently been blamed for carrying out cyberattacks with widespread consequences.

The 2018 NPR also calls for the development of more so-called low-yield nuclear weapons ― even though the U.S. already possesses over 1,000 nuclear warheads considered low-yield.

Experts say it’s clear that the Trump administration is seeking to amp up America’s nuclear capabilities, but it’s unclear what outcome the government is hoping to achieve with more nukes.

US to loosen nuclear weapons constraints and develop more 'usable' warheads

New proposal is significantly more hawkish than Obama-era policy
Critics call development of new weapons ‘dangerous, Cold War thinking’

The Flawed Push For New Nuclear Weapons Capabilities

The Obvious Question: Why?

That sounds a lot like the debate in the early-1990s (even the Cold War) where nuclear laboratory officials started advocating for development of mini-nukes and micro-nukes for use in tailored regional scenarios. During the W. Bush administration there were also attempt to get new low-yield weapons. These efforts failed but now they’re back in full force because, the advocates say, of a more aggressive Russia and North Korea’s nuclear buildup.

Sweden prepares public for war amid unease about Russia

http://www.theage.com.au/world/swed...amid-unease-about-russia-20180117-h0k0r1.html

The neutral country has begun to reverse post-Cold War defence cuts and step up military preparedness [/]bas incursions by Russian planes and submarines have sparked public debate over whether to join NATO.

Last September, Sweden held its biggest military exercise in 23 years, with war games involving 19,000 Swedish personnel and allies from Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, France, Norway and the US. Last year it voted to reintroduce conscription and also said it would start negotiations to buy a US-made Patriot missile defence system.

Towns have also been ordered to dust off Cold War-era civil defence contingency plans, including ensuring that bunkers are upgraded and maintained.

Nuclear war, extreme weather top list of 2018 global threats

http://www.theage.com.au/world/nucl...t-of-2018-global-threats-20180117-h0k0ce.html

London: Nuclear war, cyber attacks and environmental disasters top the list of man-made threats to global stability in 2018, according to a survey of 1000 international leaders from business, government, education and service groups.

The threat of another global financial meltdown, more likely in past years, has ebbed because of economic expansions underway worldwide, the annual World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report found. It was released on Wednesday in advance of the forum's meeting next week in Davos, Switzerland.

Crapitalism is no better for the average Joe. The robber barons are alive and living in luxury on the backs of under paid workers.
Here in the UK the Union bosses were found to be living for free in upmarket mansions. The Tories ( this word comes down from history meaning thieves ) are no different.
I see in the home of capitalism ( the US ) both parties are dominated by rich people, even dynisties like the Bushes, Clintons., Kennedys etc.
The human race sucks........................

That's just burying your head. You're in the human race: commit to it. What system do you want to live under?

The world ought to become a much more inclusive, tolerate ad harmony place among different cultures, races, income-levels, and wealth-distributions.

Perhaps the world's centre of gravity, in economic/ political/ cultural/ military/ etc terms, has been naturally and gradually shifted from the West to East.

Its clear that the peak of american dominance was the 1950s. JFK/LBJ institued a number of insane policies that irrevocably destroyed the stable social order that had existed and allowed america to reign supreme in world matters.
