Small businesses face post-lockdown cash crunch

U.S. macroeconomic data is broadly improving but many small businesses are facing a perilous recovery as they attempt to stay afloat after coronavirus-driven lockdowns throughout the country. That's true even for the many that received government assistance.

By the numbers: A recent poll of 7,317 small business owners by Alignable finds that 43% of firms that received money through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) say they could be out of cash in a month or less.
  • That's largely because they spent all of the money in the first eight weeks after receiving it so they could qualify to have the loans forgiven.
Details: 69% of small businesses that did not receive PPP funding say they expect to be out of cash reserves next month.
  • 76% of minority-owned businesses that did not receive PPP funding say they will run out of cash in July — with 52% saying they have already depleted their reserves.
The big picture: With stores back open, Americans have increased spending from April and May's depressed levels, but that may not be enough.
  • An IBM Institute for Business Value survey poll of more than 18,000 U.S. consumers in May and early June found that 21% of consumers say they're shopping less and more than half believe the country will experience a major economic downturn over the next year or more.
  • This could mean spending plateaus or even declines after this month rather than accelerating.
Between the lines: Some of the businesses left behind are expecting to lose significant revenue.
  • Total travel spending in the U.S. is predicted to drop 45% by the end of this year, according to a forecast prepared for the U.S. Travel Association by the company Tourism Economics.
  • That includes a decline in domestic travel spending of 40% (from $972 billion in 2019 to $583 billion in 2020) and a 75% fall in international inbound travel spending (from $155 billion to $39 billion).
One level deeper: A trade group representing health and fitness clubs says the industry lost $5.6 billion from mid-March through June 1, and will continue to lose $350 million per week through the end of the year.
  • "Even when open and for the foreseeable future, clubs will be hampered by reduced income from reduced capacity safety requirements and membership cancellations," the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association said in a press release.
  • "Clubs that have opened are opening at 25%–50% capacity, while still having 100% of their expenses."
 
How do you not see the positivity of a spread, especially what appears to be a controlled spread nationwide? There is no other way to get past this, none. Waiting on a vaccine is absurd and shutdowns do more damage than the virus itself.
Even with much larger numbers than 3 months ago we still see that 3 of 4 have no symptoms. This is great news. Of those that do have symptoms 99 percent come out just fine. More great news. This proving to be no wear near as deadly as first projected. Fantastic news. New treatment protocols are saving more lives. Mortality rate continues to drop like a rock even though cases spike. That is the best news of all.
So instead of acknowledging the positive aspects, we're told be afraid, be very afraid. Don't do anything to help yourself. Do not go out and get some exercise, don't do anything to help your immune system. Keep eating at the drive thru. Don't take any vitamins, just hit the liquor store that's still open. Don't visit any family or friends, do nothing to help you relax. Instead you should obsessively watch the "experts" tell us we're in an apocalyptic state, stay afraid, stay stressed because we all know how wonderful stress is for your immune system.
Never have we seen such a onslaught of fear mongering and gaslighting as this. Why? Oh yeah, Orange man bad.

We open. We see the virus did not go away and we begin to see the full extent of the damage.

Wait til rent and mortgages must be paid.
Wait to the trillions the FED created bring around round after round of massive inflation as interest rates are kept low and old people retirements are turned into lunch money.

If you stop watching conservative news outlets you won't be deluged in fear messages. They tell you what they say the others are saying as a way to make you fear.

Everyone else is fine with social distancing, masks and avoiding large groups and some closures as needed.

But if you want something to be afraid of consider the current attempt to kill the ACA includes the pre-existing condition rule. So.. Knowing that they will cite Covid-19 as a pre existing condition for any number of ailments involving kidneys, liver, lungs and heart etc. How does that make you feel?

One, I don't watch much news at all, maybe 10 minutes a day, which is all it takes to confirm that there isn't any news, just more rehashing of the same old crap. Two, I'm not living in fear of Covid. Due respect given to it but I won't lock myself indoors. Three, I don't know what's going to happen with ACA, and neither do you or anyone else. I put all the hand wringing prophecy in the political "if true" catagory. Bottom line, the ENTIRE media and the ENTIRE government are doing what they do best, spreading bullshit and campaigning for another term feeding at the trough serving only themselves.

The left and GWB kept telling us we can't reopen until we hit certain goal posts and they kept moving the goal posts throughout the shutdown.

Even in San Diego the one County official who voted to keep the shutdown going keeps getting quoted in the media about the risk of having to shutdown again because we have these "mini" For instance say 5 Covid cases from a restaurant.

Instead of threatening more delayed openings and shutdowns... these govt SOBs should cease admonishing and just focus on their tasks. Test and trace the the clusters If they execute well they will stop the virus.

By the way... I don't have cable and therefore don't watch cable news.
