and if those same polticians did not bring in a million more laborers a year and let in millions more illegally to drive down wages, I might believe they cared for labor and I might vote for them.

however, when you examine the lefts actions... particularly in California... it looks very much like a very cynical way to create and hold hostage a voter base.

look at how nonsensical jerry brown had to get to come up for his excuse...

1.Thats true but the degree to which technology can replace labor differs by the type of business.This guy is trying to make the same threats as fast food restaurants but technology wont be able to make the same replacements in dine in restaurants anytime soon imo.


2.Businesses that don't pay employees fairly means their employees going on government assistance and voting for politicians who promise it.

When the government ends up having to give government assistance to the workers who don't make enough money at their job I think they should.

If that guys owns multiple applebess he's making millions while the government pays hundreds a month on his employees healthcare,food stamps and other possible government assistance programs.

its as if tony thinks that ordering businesses to pay more money for labor does not result in more technology to replace labor.

did you ever notice how many people dig a big ditch in a third world country vs how many dig a big ditch here. Here we have a back hoe and and one or two guys. in a third world country you can see 10 or 15 guys doing the same work.

But that's not what we should be talking about here. If you'd tried the current automated food service (Toronto Airport) you would realize that automation is not going to replace personal service in the restaurant industry anytime soon.

What we are talking about is ending the tax payer subsidy of low wage payers and strengthening the economy by rebuilding the middle class. Of course its understandable that these greedy employers living on the dole don't want to to pay an honest wage.

Wages completely out of sync with the overall economy are causing a large distortions in the U.S. economy. We must fix that problem!

I would not eat a Applebees by choice. I prefer other venues.

The last time I ate at an Applebees was years ago. Our flight was canceled from DC to RDU, and a group of us drove back to Raleigh. We were stuck in bad traffic and 95, and stopped for dinner. The only sit-down place at the exit was Applebees. None of us were impressed.

Of course you can.

No one in there right mind would suggest Appleby's (or whatever the name is) should raise their wage independent of what competing employers are doing,. Every employer must raise their wage in concert with all other low wage employers. That is precisely why the minimum wage must be regulated at the Federal level and not piecemeal.

We commonly see posts to the effect that if the minimum is raised everywhere, the cost will just be passed on and we will be right back were we started. This is not correct! While it is true that the additional cost will be passed on, not necessarily all additional cost will be passed on directly; that that is will be passed on non-linearly, not linearly, as is sometimes incorrectly assumed.

A major consideration is how far out of whack wages are to begin with. At present, the national minimum wage is extremely far from the mean true cost of minimum wage labor. Consequently benefits to the overall economy of raising the minimum can be expected to be correspondingly large.
