Nice strawman, but that wasn't my point. My point was there was a perfectly acceptable MS solution, but someone decided to trash it and replace it. This does not make good business sense. You just doubled your development cost.
.NET is a tool, just like anything else. I try not to get whipped up into a religious fervor by the tools I use. If I find something that meets my needs better than what I am using, I will replace it as long as the replacement cost isn't prohibitive.
Things sometimes change in markets. Size doesn't matter.

Railroads? RCA? ("the most trusted name in electronics" that gave people their TV's) DEC?

"The UNIX Programing System" as presented by Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1985 (BSTJ) had most ingredients that still make up Unix/Linux today. In fact, one of its main ingredients, the C language was the vehicle in which NT itself was later programmed
(In fact BG had to hire about 30 top DEC guys to do this. He and his kiddies didn't manage with their Basic toy) . Bell never peddled its system as a tool for the future and certainly failed to shape and milk it like a cash cow. They must have done some things right though.(In fact they got butchered up for being a monopoly, albeit for other reasons than Unix)

Right now, they are supposedly redefining/rewriting C# again (heard this before).You call this ".NET [is] a tool, just like anything else" ?

Hmm ... I seem to remember programming in C language around 1980, and using a variety of Unix at that time ...... I think C language started as B language round about 1975 and the first versionof Unix started appearing at that time as well.
.Net is just another vehicle designed first to obtain customer lockin to $soft platforms and tools. It also is a set of programming langauges and object technologies but believe me the first step in its development was not technical .....

Sorry but I'm with TGregg on this. You zealots have plenty of opinions but you are lacking on any real evidence to support the claim that Microsoft is going to die. Sounds more like wishful thinking rather than anything born of rational thought.

How much money are you spending on $soft infrastructure ? Have you ever actaully tested and determined if you could save money and reduce risk by moving to another platform ? No ... ahh .. maybe its because you dont actually run a real company or report to a board of directors.
When the day comes that you actually need to account for your budget and get to pocket your savings then all of this might become "rational" to you .. as it is for many large and small companies and governments world wide.
