The Biden-Harris campaign once agains avoids answering on court packing at VP debate

I’m going to vote for Biden, but I’m extremely upset about their non-answer on this critical issue. I also think it would be a massive mistake. There’s nothing stopping the GOP from doubling the court size the next time they have power. Packing the court would be a horrible precedent. For those who think it’ll be a long time before the GOP has power again, many felt that way in 2008. Luckily, I don’t think enough Democratic senators would go along with it either for those reasons and based on the polling it’s unlikely their majority will be much bigger than 51-49. This is bigger than abortion rights, gay marriage, etc. Having the court as a check and balance is fundamental to the republic.

Let them double it, courts will lose their legitimacy as some sort of a neutral body if that's done, and that's a good thing because right now right wingers pretend that packing the courts makes them immune to will of the majority. Either agree to judicial reforms or pack the courts, absolutely the right thing to do.

Thanks man. I do like discussing/debating the issues and I try to look at each one independently regardless of party affiliation. Unfortunately many people are just here to troll the other side lol.

Garland obviously deserved a hearing, but just packing the court whenever your party takes over makes the court lose legitimacy. That’s the trend Democrats will start. The court is supposed to be the most conservative of the branches, where precedent matters and change doesn’t come easily. Hence the lifetime appointments. There should be laws passed to make sure what happened to Garland doesn’t happen again. I’m worried we have gotten to a point where it’s almost impossible for a judge to get through the Senate if it’s of an opposing party of the president. RBG got confirmed 96-3. There isn’t a chance in hell anybody could get confirmed with that kind of margin today.

Why should Harris show her hand? It would only benefit Trump, regardless of her answer. Better that the Republicans should view Biden-Harris as a bit unpredictable rather than hand McConnell their playbook.
