Actually, this isn't quite true. The purpose of fundamental analysis is to determine the value of a company. The purpose of technical analysis is to determine the value of a stock (or stock proxy). Technical analysts couldn't care less about book value and free cash flow. Fundamental analysts couldn't care less about the price of the stock (or whatever). The value of a company is what it is, unless someone has been futzing around with the figures ("beat expectations by a penny"). The value of a stock or other traded instrument is whatever someone is willing to pay for it and someone else is willing to accept (it is true that technical analysts do not attempt to measure a security's intrinsic value because it doesn't have one).

TA can evaluate securities by analyzing statistics but doing so is not necessary. Technical analysts can also evaluate securities by the balance of demand and supply and the "value" that buyers and sellers reach when they conclude a transaction. Patterns can play a part. Indicators can play a part. Charts can play a part. But none of this is necessary. One can also judge the balance between demand and supply by viewing a simple T&S display.

Those who have been in the market for less than twenty years and those who know nothing of market history may believe that TA is just another term for patterns and/or indicators just as fervently as religious fundamentalists believe that the earth was created in six days. But that does not make it so. There was a trading world before the internet, before charting software, before online daytraders, before RT streaming quotes, before discount brokerage. However, that world is not a secret, and there is no particularly good reason to be ignorant of it.
