Technical analysis won't make big investor?

Quote from TSGannGalt:

Is Quantitative Analysis included in Tech. Analysis?
How about Systematic Trading vs. Technical Analysis?
How about Neuro-linguistic Newsfeed Agent vs. Technical Analysis?
How about Quantitative Analysis over a company's balance sheet?

........................

PTJ has a lot of quants. He does a lot of Stat. Arb between equity and futures. Is this "Technical"? Buffet's background is Graham's Security Analysis he bases his trading and has a few Quants working for him going through all the reports. Is this "Technical"? Is Credit / Rates Pricing? Neuro-lingo predictor? Statistical Arbitrage? Volatility Reversion? Are they "Technical Analysis"???

My definition:

If you use charts = Technical Analysis.

All of what I mentioned doesn't require charts. (And... you don't need charts to develop trading systems.) Also, the debate and categorizing trading between "Technical" and "Fundamental" is like 15 years old, completely out-dated. The trading industry has changed since the good ol' Market Wizard days...

An interesting post. So, can you please give the answers of the various questions given above. Thanks! :)

Yes you can use TA, despite the size of your portfolio, what do you think the turtle traders were doing? A form of TA and making a killing in the market . W Buffet is a value investor with a huge time horizon, he can wait a stock out for decades and there are very few W. buffets out there.

hat was interesting, BT247 :) Can anyone give some examples so that we can really understand how to use TA? By the way, can we make use of TA in trading software?

Yes, TA is similar to "Trading for Dummies." If you are not willing to invest the time to study how market prices work, you will be a a member of the "95%" club.

[note: ignoring the TA lovers who will whine "but price action IS TA." Whether it is or not, that is not what newbie traders are thinking. They are thinking MACD, ADX, RSI, etc. etc...]
