It really is amazing how well Orwell predicted our times.
The term you're referring to is called "Doublethink", and it <i>used</i> to exist only in the realm of science-fiction dystopia.

Another spot-on Orwell prediction: Oppressive gov't coming up with ironic names for all their bullshit:
Patriot Act... Ministry of Truth... Clean Skies Act... War is Peace... Freedom is Slavery... Ministry of Homeland Security... No Child Left Behind...

Which ones are from the book, and which ones are real? It's getting kind of hard to tell.
