Spybot - Any Good?

Spybot Search and Destroy is a very good malware detector. You should install it in addition to your standard anti-virus software.

It does not run constantly in the background. You should manually launch a scan every few days.

i've had good luck with the free malwarebytes, i've had it nail stuff the others cant catch more than once
 
I used Spybot S&D for a number of years. A couple of years ago I also began using the Yahoo Anti-Spy on the IE toolbar. It seems to work just as well, only much faster. After running the Yahoo Anti-Spy, the Spybot S&D never had anything to delete. Enter Occam.

It has a built-in function, forgot the exact name, that does run in the background and detects registry changes. One of the best tools ever, as you can deny the registry change real-time, or accept it.

When installing programs and visiting certain sites, you can be very surprised by what they try to hide in your registry.

Is this the immunization thing someone mentioned earlier? I will have to look into that further.. Do you know if spybot is a resource hog if it's running constantly in the background?

I've been using Spybot for years. It works great, you can use the little Tea Timer registry protector and run it in the background but it's not really necessary. I've been through a ton of software. For starters I'll say for virus protection you cannot beat NOD32 or Kaspersky. I've tried Bit Defender, it was an early version when they were just starting to get big. The detection was great but the program was buggy. I think they have fixed everything by now. For other malware I use MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware(not the virus/trojan that came out a while back but the actual program). Those two programs don't look fancy but they actually work pretty well. Also Avast antivirus is completely free for home use and has pretty solid protection. I've used that for a long time.
 
spybot and adaware will get 95% of the garden variety stuff - but you have to use them both

the other 5% is really nasty malware that comes from perving the really sick porn sites
once you take in that shit - you gotta have a clean back up somewhere

Nah most antivirus will actually do the trick you just need time and know how. I've gotten some terrible shit before.
