All the evidence suggests the death rate for CV is somewhere between 0.3% and 1.0%.

That would be put the number of actually infected in New York state between 0.9 to 2.5 million.

The evidence that CV has a higher death rate than regular flu is obvious by now. It is way more deadly.
Im being conservative by saying it could be as low as 0.3%, thats the best case.

Where is your evidence that 50% (10 million) people are infected?

You are correct.

The hope is after the lockdowns are removed, testing and contact tracing can track down new cases with fast quarantines for those infected.
Also better screening and testing at Airports.
Lets hope this works in the US.
The other hope is that if if this doesn't completely work there will still be a lower number of continuous cases but low enough for Hospitals to handle.
