George Will explains why that's the case here:

It's become a joke among young people. You go to a campus where this kind of political correctness reins, and some young person will say looks like it's going to rain. The person listening says, you're a racist. I mean it's so inappropriate. The constant implication of this that it is, I think, becoming a national mirth.
"... Overuse it and the words don't have the power they once did. Eventually, they become common.
From the article:
This is what I was talking about the other day. Eventually, the claim of racism will lose it's teeth and everyone will just laugh whenever someone brings out the racist card. It's killing it's own potency via overuse.

This is what I was talking about the other day. Eventually, the claim of racism will lose it's teeth and everyone will just laugh whenever someone brings out the racist card. It's killing it's own potency via overuse. It's no different than profanity. It used to be the profanity was used whenever a situation was drastic or significant enough to call for that language. Overuse it and the words don't have the power they once did. Eventually, they become common.

Just like when they call someone who questions AGW a "denier". I laugh everytime I hear that. One thing I have noticed about leftist kooks over the years. The worse they are doing, the louder and crazier they get. Next few months are going to be fun watching them twisting in the wind on the Obama flag pole.![]()
You won't know that he was being sarcastic , right!LOL see what I mean?![]()
