Whitefish Energy — had only two full-time employees on the day Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, according to the Post. It added that the company signed the contract with the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority — the largest yet issued to help restore Puerto Rico — to help fix the island's electrical infrastructure.

The company now has 280 workers on the island, the Post reported, a majority of whom are subcontractors.

I agree! Fuck the working class subcontractors. This project should have been awarded to a large multinational corporation that doesn't pay it's workers a fair wage. Government contracts should never be awarded to small businesses just multinational corporation owned by the 1%. Employed workers should never be allowed to start their own company. Fuck them.

Awarding a contract to a small company......I am so upset about this.

Minimizing cost and passing on the savings to customers is a terrible business model and horrible for customers.

According to Whitefish website:

"The Company’s extensive subcontractor relationships enable it to address projects at any scale while minimizing overhead and passing cost savings through to the client."

I have a bridge, it's for sale.

The company (Whitefish Energy) has a contract with Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) which does not involve the federal government. If there are concerns about the contract then people should demand that PREPA open up information on how they performed the bidding process and selected the final company to perform the service.

The other thing to remember is that Whitefish Energy is just one of the companies selected by PREPA to help (Yet the article does not mention this). Considering most of the poorly maintained electrical infrastructure in Puerto Rico was wiped out by Maria -- it is understandable that multiple contract firms have been hired to help and large sized contracts were rewarded. I expect that PREPA was trying to arrive at the lowest possible cost for the contract help and this gave smaller firms which use contractors an edge in the bidding process.

What did the Interior Dept have to do with this?

I like how they bypassed the open bidding and decided paying each employee 300/hr+350/night+80/day in food was fair.

Or how they thought it was a good idea to give a 2 employee company a contract to service millions.

Whitefish Energy happened to be the first firm available to arrive and they were the ones that first accepted terms and conditions for PREPA.

When you have a national disaster, you want to get things fixed as quick as possible. You don't wait a month while people are without electricity because you're trying to get a good deal. Puerto Rico needs electricity now because they can't even power their refrigerators to keep food fresh. If the big name electricity guys couldn't get down there fast enough (or refused to agree to terms and conditions) why should they get the contract?
