Sleepy Joe created a disaster . Millions of job openings nobody will work

Not sure, but you may have inadvertently made my earlier point that as long as these payments are there, employers will have to compete. I concluded that's not necessarily a bad thing!

You won't be surprised to learn that for many, many years some economists have been proposing that government automatically act as employer of last resort (sort of a permanent WPA). The result, they say, would be: 1] elimination of the minimum wage , as the government's minimum, living wage would effectively become the wage that private sector employers would have to compete against; 2] elimination of unemployment and unemployment insurance, since by definition no one is unemployed other than those voluntarily removing themselves from the labor force. There would be permanent full employment. 3] elimination of most welfare programs as the governments minimum wage would automatically be a living wage. 4] Elimination of corporate subsidies in the form of welfare paid to workers making less than a living wage.

They tout several other benefits as well. But as with all great plans, the devil, i'm sure, would be in the details.

Of course it’s a bad thing! You are paying more taxes in order to have the privilege of spending more money on goods and services! So that a bunch of people can choose not to work.

Start a business. Hire a bunch of workers at $15-20 an hour. Understand how people at that wage level think (both good and bad) and then let’s have a discussion. Until then you don’t know what you are talking about.

I have 300 employees in that wage range.

I’m all for a safety net, but the Covid stimulus’s were largely just handouts to the point that those who really needed it didn’t get it.

In my state non of those were an issue. In fact we had the opportunity to lay everyone off for one day a week and they all got the 600 benefit.
Yes because they were ... laid off for one day a week.

Were restaurant and hotel and airline workers laid off for one a week?

And many others? Still?

Why would anyone in their right mind put their lives at risk for the Red State $7.70 a hour during the time we knew little about Covid? Essential Workers got screwed unless they were union workers.

well, you couldn’t quit and get the unemployment. So you had a weird situation. If you were earning 7.7 hour cleaning horse poop, you were out of luck.

What’s your point? I’m saying that they had no incentive to look for another job. I get that jobs weren’t easy to find then but it created a perverse incentive that they shouldn’t look for a job. And now to continue it as the economy is reopening is beyond stupid.

I thought you understood all this. Didn’t you own some businesses?

I did own two businesses and it is why I do understand it. When there are no jobs, there is no reason to look for one.

An anecdotal story or two is not the whole story. People are not choosing to stay unemployed simply because they got a lousy stinking $1400.

I think you missed my point again. Let's wait a bit to make that call. those service sector jobs are just now starting to open up again. And congratulations if your hauling in 400K/yr or more. Nice going. The rest of us will see a little increase but not much most of this stimulus is going to be paid for with deficit spending . And that doesn't necessarily have to be paid back in they way we think it does. It only has to be paid back if it turns out it was too much spending too quickly and we run into inflation that our income does not keep up with. Then we will pay it via inflation. (I think we will see stepped up inflation coming up, but I attribute the inflation we are seeing now despite the official tally, as due to Trump deficits. As far as i'm concerned the jury is already in on the effect of massive deficits under full employment -- i.e., first three years of the Trump 'administration')*

It’s not our story. It’s the story of the 16 recruiting firms we use throughout all the states we have facilities.

Inflation because there will be demand for goods and services from free government stimulus and no supply because few job takers. It’s already happening.

taxes have to go up. Covid was the greatest wealth transfer in american history. First by Trumps incompetence and now Biden’s giveaway.
