Six 22" monitor setup

Welcome to the DIY club, bro! :)

My thoughts:

If you decide on having the 2560 x 1600 30" screens, make sure you have the video card(s) that would support it. Because the low-price cards such as PNY 8400 GS cannot support that kind of high res.

The set of 6 x 22" (1920 x 1080) [equate to 12.4 Mil pixels]
3 x 30" (2560 x 1600) [equate to 12.2 Mil pixels]. About the same.

The ATI video card that supports 2560 x 1600 resolution sounds much more expensive than the run-of-the-mill 1920x1080 card. I am not sure if it supports dual 30" mons. And I also feel that the 30" monitors are much more expensive than the 22-24 group. May be $1100 each?

If my guess is correct, 3 x 30" mons = $3300+, 2 (or 3?) ATI cards = $600. Just this display component is already $3900. (Much higher than your PC box)

The 6 x 22" mon options: 6 x $200 + 3 x $60 = $1380.

Perhaps this suggestion:

Get some cardboards. Do some cut-outs. 3 x 30" mon (about 28" x 21"). And 6 x 22" mon (about 20" x 17"). Lay/mount the cardboards in front of you on your trading desk. Imagine how you would display your trading charts. See which configuration would suit you the best.

Here I've been running around with a tape measure when I could have tried the cardboard cutouts, and had a MUCH better view of what the finished display is going to look like... MUCH appreciated bolimomo!:)

The six 22's certainly would be more cost effective. Some want me to do the 30's, and others say go with 24's, or 22's. I'm slowly suffering from "analysis paralysis.":D

This is something that I take as seriously as building a house, for example, so it's been a "I'll order this setup. No, I'll order that setup," etc.,

That suggestion has given me the ability to FINALLY make a decision, and spend the $. Thanks!

Once it's done, I'll put some pics together, and post them.

Just got back window-shopping at Fry's. Some updates:

PNY 8400 GS - they do support the 2560 x 1600 resolution with the DVI output. With VGA only 2040 x 1080 (or something like that). So if your monitors have DVI input you are okay. (PNY 8400 GS has dual DVI outputs on each card.)

The current price for 24" monitor: $250. 22" monitor: slightly less than $200. I have many Samsang SyncMaster 22" and 23". I love them. The color is great.

EGVA 8400 GS cards on sale... with rebates... only $35 a card. (Not sure if both are DVI though. Some cards have 1 VGA and 1 DVI config).

why don't you go for broke.. get a i-7 proc, three 30" monitors and about 10 gig of mem coupled to a 1000watt PS? ..that's a class-A sys

wouldn't have to upgrade for 10 yrs

After the check I'm going to be writing this week, I don't know if I'll have enough $ left to go to an internet cafe. :( :D

How much is that setup? I can't imagine 3 30" with 10gig. Wow!

Before you spend you money on the 10GB memory... Consider this:

My set up. I originally configured 12GB memory on my Intel i7-930 box. But later on I pulled out 6GB and use them on a second box. With 6GB, i7-930, Windows 7 64-bit, driving 8 monitors, running TradeStation: about 30 charts total:

Memory usage: usually less than 4GB used, leaving >2GB free.

I think the additional memory (>6GB) may be a waste. Unless 10GB and 6GB are about the same price.

You guys are outstanding!

I really can't justify buying one completed, when building one with your help is much more fun!

Kind of like going out and buying a C6 Z06 vs. building/specing out a custom hot rod with everything you want, minus what you don't need.

PLUS, I'm sure it's going to be cool sitting in front of the completed project, trading and saying to myself, "got this done with help from actual traders, not a computer company wanting to sell a 'trading' system.":)

Thanks again! I owe you all one!:)
