Tobacco/nicotine is a smart drug. Through increasing dopamine and inhibiting MAO enzymes in the brain, it increases concentration, focus and memory and decreases risk and manifestations of cognitive problems such as ADD, Alzheimer's and parkinson's disease. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotine#Therapeutic_uses

.

I have read that people with schizophrenia tend to smoke a lot more then people in the general population. I think they said that it somehow helps them as well but I can't recall where I saw the study and I don't feel like looking for it.

Among schizophrenics taking anti-psychotic medications smoking is likely highly therapeutic against the deadening effect of the medications which, among other sedating effects, shut down dopamine (a major feel good and pay attention chemical) in the brain.

I don't know whether schizophrenics who are not chronically medicated are also more likely to smoke. If they do, its likely related to another chemical or psychological factor.

Goddam you brandon!!! This is the second OLD thread I got caught by today.

Anway, my mother died too young at age 69. Her two favorite things in life were gin and menthol cigarettes. Even after she developed emphysema and had to be tethered to an oxygen machine, she wouldn't give up her cigs. Well, that's not exactly true. The only time she smoked in her later years was when she was drunk.

I ain't the least bit angry or resentful at cigarettes for sending my mom to an early grave. She loved them and they helped her enjoy life more.

Smoke 'em if ya got 'em!

PS: I quit smoking on November 20, 1986.

My mother died from smoking at 69 also. Her last days she was literally gasping for breath with the oxygen mask on her face. Lord knows I have some bad habits like a good steak and probably too many Sam Adams on the weekend but the thing with smoking is that (many smokers) smoke all thru the day, not just occasionally.

There are fewer issues more cut and dried than this, other than Mozillo should be hanged.

If you smoke, you are an imbecile.

Period.

Don't bother to respond is you're one of them.

Do you realize that people will do exactly the opposite of what you want them to do just because they do not wish to be associated with you and your judgements AND they may outsmart you, outlive you, outwork you AND someday an "imbecile" may save your life, improve your life and may make the world a better place for you to live.

In two words, who cares.

Do you realize that if you imprison or execute a mass murderer, you may be preventing that person from curing cancer?

If your smokers want the world to be a better place, they already have that power. Put down the cancer sticks forever.
