Blue States Are Truly The Welfare States

The assertions made above about red and blue state spending are simply absurd and have been completely debunked in multiple in-depth studies. These charts are from the Mother Jones articles and merely play games with statistics with total disregard for accounting standards involving government expenditures (or in other words - they are totally misapplying amounts to red states that are actually sent to blue states - such as 80% of crop subsidies)

Let's eliminate military base spending, farm subsidies, and other non-welfare federal spending from the accounting.

The red states do not really want the military bases that were forced on them. These bases take up large tracts of land that are useful for other economic purposes and require local money spent on policing & other services because they tend to be high crime / low income areas. Let's put a large military base in NYC or Boston - and bulldoze all the existing homes.

The displaced residents from these blue cities can survive on the 80%+ of large farm subsidies that are sent to the owners of corporate farms who reside in blue states (but is seen as red state money for some reason).

Let's properly focus on federal welfare spending--defined here as childhood nutrition programs, food stamp programs, WIC benefits TANF benefits, and other similar benefits.

This article from USA Today "New Yorkers lead pack in government benefits" compiled data showing which states had the highest per capita expenditures for every type of government-provided benefit and blue states top the list and red states made up most of the bottom 10.

Top 10 - Most dependent on government aid
1 New York
2 West Virginia
3 Rhode Island
4 Maine
5 Pennsylvania
6 Massachusetts
7 Vermont
8 Kentucky
9 Michigan
10 Connecticut

Bottom 10 - Least dependent on government aid
41 South Dakota
42 Nebraska
43 Wyoming
44 Idaho
45 Georgia
46 Texas
47 Nevada
48 Virginia
49 Colorado
50 Utah

One of the dumbest statements made. You'd have to fight the red states Governors and citizens and business owners tooth and nail to get them to let go of their cash cow military bases.

Obviously you do not know the history of military bases in the U.S. - or in the South. Where are the blue state governors who fought hard for bases in their states? Don't exist, eh? The Red states don't want the military bases either - they take up huge tracts of otherwise prime land while paying no property taxes while still requiring an excessive amount of local services (water, sewer, police, etc.).

How about we send you the entire city of Fayetteville - North Carolina really does not want to host FayetteNam anymore. You do realize that in North Carolina, every time they propose expanding one of the military bases - all of our representatives at the federal, state, and local levels fight against it. The latest was the proposed expansion of a bombing range in the Northeast corner of our state.

McCrory: Strong military tie vital for N.C.
By Gov. Pat McCrory For the Salisbury Post Posted: Wednesday, December 18, 2013 12:26 a.m.
Gov. Pat McCrory
Gov. Pat McCrory
North Carolina is blessed and honored to be the home of six major military installations and 139,000 brave men and women in uniform who serve our state and our country. An additional 769,000 veterans call The Old North State home.
Our military presence has enormous economic impact for our state. It accounts for $48 billion dollars, which is 10 percent of our economy and 540,000 jobs.

While much of the military activity is located in Eastern North Carolina, 82 of our 100 counties have businesses that received military contracts in 2012. Clearly, we must work vigorously to nurture and grow North Carolina’s relationship with the military.
We’re proud of our military installations and our military communities. They support many of our towns and businesses throughout the state. That’s the message we took to Washington, D.C., earlier this month when meeting with military and congressional leaders at the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill. We’re thankful for the military’s presence as an economic engine and North Carolina wants to be a permanent partner.
The trip to the Pentagon and Capitol Hill is only part of our efforts to protect and grow military investment in North Carolina. This year, we supported increased education opportunities for active duty personnel, promoted more and better job opportunities for veterans, and legislation was signed into law to better protect the operational capabilities of our military bases from encroachment. We also restructured the North Carolina Military Affairs Commission to inform key leaders on how we can better meet the needs of the armed forces, active duty personnel and veterans.
As the War in Iraq has concluded and with Afghanistan operations scheduled to conclude in 2014, it is estimated that 60,000 active duty personnel will separate from service in North Carolina during the next five years. Many of those leaving the military will be doing so with multiple overseas tours under their belts. They will have specialized training and experience in fields such as health care, law enforcement, construction and communications. Our goal is to encourage these folks to stay in North Carolina and help grow our economy. We want to match these American heroes with the needs of our job marketplace.
The military has a long, proud history in North Carolina and has been a valuable partner to local governments across the state. We’ll continue to work closely with Pentagon officials and other military leaders as well as support the good work of our congressional delegation to ensure that the military remains a vital part of our culture, economy and our future.
Sustaining and growing our state’s relationship with the military is a key part of North Carolina’s economic revival.
Pat McCrory is the governor of North Carolina.

Ignorance can be cured gwb.

While at the same time our Governor opposes the expansion of any military base existing in North Carolina or the opening of new ones. As noted in the article we are overwhelmed with military bases which are located in 82 of our 100 counties. While they provide jobs, it does not offset the cost of local services provided to entities and people who pay not property tax or income tax in our state.

Gov. Mike Easley sent a letter to North Carolina's Congressional delegation, asking them to withhold funding for the project until the Navy considers another site.

Opposition Continues to Mount Over Proposed Naval Landing Field
http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/1375354/

The state House is joining the growing list of politicians to voice their opposition to the proposed Navy landing field in Washington and Beaufort counties.

Several House members introduced a joint resolution Wednesday, asking the Navy to look for a better location for the landing field.

What ever gwb, any awareness of past base closures and the fight to keep them open in all states should be proof enough for anyone not blinded by what ever it is your blinded by.
Surely you can see the failure in logic of your argument, don't you?

"Let's eliminate military base spending, farm subsidies, and other non-welfare federal spending from the accounting."

So let's not count corporate welfare?? Really!?!?! Welfare king Boehner would certainly not approve of eliminating that Tank factory the army wanted to close .

As for the above link regarding the NC governor not liking military base expansion, he's a democrat! Look at the new (republican) governor, from his webpage: Expand Opportunities for Key Industries to Strengthen North Carolina:

North Carolina is the most military-friendly state in the nation. With its $23 billion economic footprint in North Carolina, the military will be a top priority for Pat McCrory. He will:

- Encourage the Department of Defense to locate more military missions in North Carolina and protect existing military bases and assets in North Carolina;

-Promote military-community relationships to strengthen communities through regional planning to ensure strong schooling and infrastructure while fighting base encroachment;

etc... That doesn't sound like cutting back on the military.

There has been bipartisan support in North Carolina at the federal, state, and local level opposed to expanding any existing military bases or opening new ones in our state for over three decades. Even military veterans (we have many of them) are opposed to new or expanded bases in our state. The military footprint in our state is already too heavy; we would welcome moving any of these installations to the Northeast states.

if you wish to talk about corporate welfare... the list starts with banks bailouts wallstreet and the federal reserve itself. All big democrat contributors. Historically the dems and the fed have been in bed.
