My €0.02 :
Russia can thank common sense and some newfound social stability for their markets today. They also got out of the emerging clutches of saturating corruption that was getting a foothold in the Heartland just after the Soviet collapse. Russia is structuring themselves to be a player in the future - and they know how to use trust and integrity - for now.

Actually, even Colin Powell yesterday said that it was Saakashvili. But as we know - through support and military advisors, you can get a lot done. Normally there are not the populations that declare war on each other - there are corporations and other interests who do the preliminaries... ALL history shows this.

I did a quite extensive geopolitical systems analysis with regards to the Georgia conflict when it was emerging, and I don't think any of what I said has been wrong as of yet. Even the later reactions by Russia and Europe. Why? Because it makes sense, that's why. That is called "systems intelligence".

Have you been to Russia? You sound like the majority of people who haven't been there or have just briefly visited. When oil is depleted (analysts say Russian peak oil has been reached) the social stability will diminish really quickly. Also, I cannot say "social stability" without a grin, whats the percentage of homeless muscovites again? 10%, 20%?

Remember, nationalized Russian TV channels are not the only sources for information. Censorship is bad, mkay.

I do not believe Georgia was completely innocent in this (I do think they were the initiators but to what level?) but the Russians clearly knew what was happening and were prepared - why were thousands of tanks deployed near the Georgian border before the conflict began? If it was a conflict regarding S. Ossetia and Abkhazia why were they near Tbilisi?

BTW: Why hasn't Chechnya been allowed independence (whats left of it, after Russia organized genocide)? I'd really like this answered.

I have an apartment in São Paulo - and "Grande Sao Paulo" is more than 24 million people...
I have only been into Karelia of Russia, when I worked a while for Nokia Telecommunications R&D in Finland.

Why doesn't the US let Hawaii have it's independence?
And why can't Alaska have their independence?

At least Hawaii was brutally robbed by corrupt privateers, and the native Hawaiians are being marginalized... They have frequent and sometimes violent protests against the US oppression, and Baby Jay Penn MMA wizard is one of their front figures...
