Very good article: Nuclear or not? Not.
If Russia uses a nuke outside of its conventional 2012 borders, it has started a Third World War only this time it will have no Allied Nations save perhaps North Korea. Even that one seems far fetched.
China is not in. Neither is India. Belarus won’t participate and neither will Kazakhstan. Eritrea is irrelevant to this. Iran isn’t joining in either.
Putin has made the rounds and he has been chastised at every turn.
NO ONE WANTS THIS.
But, what does this mean?
Well it’s the end of the Russian Federation as we know it. Perhaps the Federation itself.
China cannot have a U.S. controlled beachhead in Outer Manchuria but won’t back Russia’s nuclear play. So China invades Outer Manchuria, which will be a cakewalk because Russia only has about 120,000 troops in the whole region.
They litterally have no other choice here.
NATO air forces will penetrate Russian Air Space in the West and begin destroying the military and logistics infrastructure of the Russian heartland within an hour of a nuclear detonation in Europe. Anywhere in Europe. NATO doesn’t even need nukes, they can use conventional bombs.
Russia lost the command and control vehicle for their vaunted air defense system to the Ukrainians in mid to late March, the U.S. took custody of it immediately. That is more than enough time to develop the necessary exploits to break the systems strengths. Not enough time for Russia to have reworked the entire system.
Right now, Russia is particularly vulnerable.
NATO planes turned off their transponders last month. Understand that this entire escalation cycle has been playing out for more than two months.
Once a satisfactory quantity of Russian nuclear assets have been destroyed, the Polish Army will roll into Ukraine and forcibly expel the Russians with the Ukrainians. They might not come alone. Bear in mind that Kaliningrad might no longer even exist at this point.
It certainly won’t after the 5th US Marine Division arrives and breaks whatever hasn’t been bombed into obsolescence.
Russia will be forcibly disarmed and its territory will have shrunk.
This is the best case scenario.
Everything else is more akin n to the World War 3 my generation grew up dreading.
People seem to fret that Russia has more nukes than the U.S. and even NATO combined. That doesn’t matter. 1000 strategic nukes could basically end Europe, the United States and indeed the Russian Federation. Everything else is overkill.
Great Britain has enough nuclear weapons to destroy Russia proper. The Brits and Britain alone.
We all thought we were past this. This fiddling with doomsday. The Kremlin is still enamored of the possibility of a “limited nuclear war”. Which in truth is a thing. It’s just not something the Russian Federation can survive politically. Europe and the U.S. on the other hand probably can. So could China.
This is the absurdity of this. It is Putin’s ultimate failure. He has had more than six months in Ukraine and he still can’t establish Air Superiority, much less dominance.
He has no hope of repelling the combined Air Power of NATO. Without that his belly is wide open.
Now don’t get me wrong. Millions of people will probably die. This will be the single most tragic turn of events in human history.
It is totally avoidable.
However the rules have been laid out. If Russia uses a nuclear weapon, anywhere in the world, he’s done. It’s War, total War. Not this grinding meat market of a dogs breakfast he has created in Ukraine but a war that will be fought on Russian territory.
Allied Armies don’t need to penetrate deep into the country. That’s not a goal. They will simply dismantle every single factory, power plant and energy sector facility and Russia will truly be back in the 19th century.
No one in the West can stop Vladimir Putin from starting a World War. It is clearly a thing he is trying to do. Giving him Ukraine will not stop this progression because there is an ideology in Russia that actually wants this. It’s hard to kill an idea.
The rest of the world however can insure this is the last war Russia will initiate for the next century. That is the only possible course of action. It is both a moral and geostrategic necessity. The future of the human race might actually depend on that.
Russia hates NATO. Because NATO exists to prevent exactly what Russia is doing in Ukraine right now. The Alliance exists because Stalin wanted to conquer the world. For Putin though, the world has never been enough.
Vladimir Putin is widely considered to be the single richest person in the world. He controls the largest polity on Earth, in geographic terms, with absolute authority. Yet for some pathological reason he needs to control everything else too.
There is a fear that if he cannot have that he will simply destroy the world. This is probably utter foolishness but if he goes full launch and tries to burn the world with him he should know it won’t work.
Something will survive of liberal democracy although it will very likely have a Kiwi accent. Nothing will survive of Russia though. Nothing. Not even himself in some palatial nuclear bunker because someone who works for him sold that information to the West.
Who wrote the article? Which publication? While I enjoyed the article, there may be possibilities the author is not considering where Putin detonating a nuke would not cause the loss of his allies.
