Russia & Ukraine

Here we go. Right on schedule. With Russian soldiers you can set your clock by it.

Russian troops are using rape as an 'instrument of war' to terrorise Ukrainian families, country's prosecutor-general warns

How very Soviet of them. There are many cited instances. Holding the Russian soldiers accountable will be difficult despite attempts by Ukraine to do so.

Drunken Russian soldier accused of ‘repeatedly raping’ Ukrainian woman
Ukraine has informed Russia that the man is wanted ‘on suspicion of violating the laws and customs of war’

Ukraine’s prosecutor-general has accused Russian soldiers of killing a Ukrainian civilian and repeatedly raped a woman after breaking into their home near Kyiv.

Iryna Venediktova said officials are investigating the attack perpetrated by a drunken Russian soldier in Brovary, an eastern suburb of the capital.

She said: “This evil man broke into a private house and shot the owner. After that, the drunken occupier and his colleague repeatedly raped the wife of the killed civilian, threatening her with violence and weapons.

“He even threatened her young child, who was with the victim.”

She added that Ukraine has informed Russia that the man is wanted “on suspicion of violating the laws and customs of war” after a warrant for his arrest was issued.

Ms Venediktova continued: “We will find every villain and make him answer for all the severity of the law.”

Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky has previously decried the actions of Russian soldiers, accusing them of perpetrating atrocities against civilians.

He told the Italian Parliament on Tuesday: “There are Russian troops who are killing and raping people and kidnapping children, torturing people and looting. They take our property back to Russia on trucks. This is what Nazis did during the war when they occupied other countries.”

Lesia Vasylenko, an MP for the Ukrainian Holos Party, has also warned stories of sexual violence are being underreported.

She told the UK Parliament earlier this month: “Putin’s army is committing war crimes and crimes against humanity. They are against the most vulnerable. He shifted his strategy to target specifically women and children.

“We have reports of women gang-raped, these women are usually the ones who are unable to get out. We are talking about senior citizens. Most of these women have either been executed after the crime of rape or they have taken their own lives.”

Ms Vasylenko said those who were killed were being “hanged”.

She said victims and families of victims did not “have the strength or the capacity to come forward”.

Kim said that the Russians had retreated and left their colleagues' charred bodies behind on the battlefield. He sent CNN pictures of the abandoned corpses, adding: "There are hundreds of them, all over the region."

Victor Andrusiv: "The problem with Russian bodies is really huge. It's thousands of them. Before the war, the weather was cold, it was okay but now we have problems ... I actually don't know what we will do in the next weeks."

The Russian people are not - so far as I can tell- interested in seeing either Russians killed or the Ukrainians. Except for the hard core Putin bootlickers.

This is 100% correct. Russians are pissed off. But they have as many low information citizens as we do, and are easily swayed by propaganda. And Putin is desperately trying to harness anti-west sentiment (which comes easily to Russians) and make it about that.

They got the stock market reopened finally and had a up day. Likely the usual dead cat bounce.

The "re-opening' is a charade. A sad joke.

Statement by Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics Daleep Singh on Russia’s Plans to Partially Re-Open StockMarket
March 24, 2022 • Statements and Releases

What we’re seeing is a charade: a Potemkin market opening. After keeping its markets closed for nearly a month, Russia announced it will only allow 15% of listed shares to trade, foreigners are prohibited from selling their shares, and short selling in general has been banned. Meanwhile, Russia has made clear they are going to pour government resources into artificially propping up the shares of companies that are trading. This is not a real market and not a sustainable model—which only underscores Russia’s isolation from the global financial system. The United States and our allies and partners will continue taking action to further isolate Russia from the international economic order as long it continues its brutal war against Ukraine.

Russians kidnap journalist's father in Melitopol and demand she return and report to them
https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2022/03/23/7333916/

On Wednesday, Russian occupiers broke into the home of journalist and director of the Ria-Melitopol website, Svitlana Zalizetska, and kidnapped her 75-year-old father.

Source: Zalizetska in a statement to Suspilne

Details: The journalist's parents were at home at the time of the Russian invasion. The occupiers searched the house, took the journalist's father and removed him to an unknown location.

According to Zalizetska: "They told my mother that they will return my father only after I go to them. But I don't plan to go, because I left town after a conversation with Halyna Danylchenko, who proclaimed herself acting 'mayor' of the town a few days after our conversation".

Details: According to the journalist, Danylchenko suggested that she cooperate with the occupiers and spoke about their prospects. After this conversation she decided to leave the city because she was not going to cooperate with the Russians.

The condition of the journalist's father and his whereabouts are unknown. According to Zalizetska, she has already applied to the Main Department of the National Police in Zaporizhzhia Region and is waiting for an answer.

The journalist noted that her father had previously suffered a stroke, and her mother had had a massive heart attack involving cardiac arrest.

Background:
  • People are constantly being kidnapped in occupied Melitopol. Back on 10 March, the occupiers kidnapped Zaporizhzhia regional council deputy Leyla Ibragimova, but then released her.
  • On 11 March, Russians kidnapped Melitopol mayor Ivan Fedorov in the street. He was later exchanged for captured Russian conscripts.
  • On 12 March, the Russians kidnapped activist Olha Haysumova, who had been organising protests in the city, right from the site of the protests.
  • Later, the occupiers kidnapped the head of the Melitopol district council, Serhiy Priyma, and tried to kidnap the secretary of the city council, Roman Romanov.
  • On 21 March, three Israeli citizens as well as several representatives of the local media holding company were kidnapped in Melitopol; the journalists were later released.

So the Ukrainians have apparently killed off all of the invading Russian generals. Now are working through the colonels and majors.
