I think Vanzandt touched on this. We can't be certain of course what Putin will do next, but being human ourselves, we understand human psychology. If someone in a powerful position, like Biden's, labels Putin "a war criminal", it becomes a potentially serious personal threat. Putin knows very well what happened to the German high command after World War II and what happened to Slobodan Milosevic. We shouldn't do anything that might heighten his desperation. If, in fact, he begins to feel cornered, that he is on the verge of losing the War in Ukraine and with it control of the government, he may become desperate and irrational. We shouldn't want to do anything that might increase the odds of that happening while he is still in charge of the Russian War Machine.. It would have been better, in my opinion, had Biden let others label Putin "a war criminal" and simply pass on the opportunity to do it.

My memory isn't great these days, but I believe I read comments of his on the internet. Perhaps it was in one of the British papers where he first mentioned he would donate proceeds from the sale of his football club to ongoing humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. I'll look in the Guardian.

I guess it was this: "The situation in Ukraine is horrific and devastating. Chelsea FC’s thoughts are with everyone in Ukraine. Everyone at the club is praying for peace." But this is a club statement issued I think while Abramovich was still in charge of the club, and it does not bear Abramovitch's signature. On second thought, I don't think I have seen any examples of where one of these Oligarchs has come right out and condemned Putin for his unprovoked War on Ukraine. I imagine they are all a little afraid of being served a polonium cocktail.

I think you are right , and I am wrong.
