Nobody believed that this might happen. My bet was that there's nothing for Putin to gain, only a downfall.
My sister has a coworker girl, a refuge from Mariupol. She told something like
,,They told us, few days before the Russians invaded, face to face and via television, that everyone should evacuate, but we didn't believed. People kept on living their daily lives, taking children to kinder gardens, buying groceries at shops and taking bus to job. Then few days later we saw buildings getting hit by rockets''

Yet we have veterans with mental disabilities sleeping under park benches, TV commercials soliciting money to help veterans whose whose body's were shattered and torn by ANOTHER war that cost over a trillion dollars and accomplished absolutely nothing that apparently the Federal government doesn't have the money to help, a VA that epitomizes incompetency at its finest, police departments laying off officers for reasons of budget shortfalls, an infrastructure that hasn't been upgraded since Eisenhower for the most part, school systems that can't pay teachers, schools with no security falling victims to psychopaths....... and the list goes on and on.
So yeah, lets send Ukraine another $20B because "Putin will surely march in on Paris like Hitler did".

And that is just it. We all know both countries already have their nuclear dicks pointing at each other, so there will be no more aggressive action that that, and this shitty land battle will continue for years. But I guess that is why the real meat comes to the table when it comes down to the point of it..."Nuclear deterrent".
