Billionaire Abramovich, Ukrainian peace negotiators hit by suspected poisoning - reports

March 28 (Reuters) - Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich and Ukrainian peace negotiators suffered symptoms of suspected poisoning earlier this month after a meeting in Kyiv, the Wall Street Journal and the investigative outlet Bellingcat reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Abramovich, who accepted a Ukrainian request to help negotiate an end to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and at least two senior members of the Ukrainian team, were affected, the WSJ report said.

Ukrainian officials poured cold water on the report. Asked about the suspected poisoning, Ukrainian negotiator Mykhailo Podolyak said "there is a lot of speculation, various conspiracy theories". Rustem Umerov, another member of the negotiating team, urged people not to trust "unverified information".

The Kremlin did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

According to the WSJ report, Abramovich and the negotiators showed symptoms that included red eyes, constant and painful tearing, and peeling skin on their faces and hands.

Abramovich and the Ukrainian negotiators, including Crimean Tatar lawmaker Umerov, have since improved and their lives are not in danger, WSJ reported.

A person familiar with the matter confirmed the incident to Reuters but said Abramovich had not allowed it to stop him working.

Bellingcat said experts who examined the incident concluded "poisoning with an undefined chemical weapon" was the most likely cause.

Citing the experts, Bellingcat said the dosage and type of toxin used was not enough to be life-threatening, "and most likely was intended to scare the victims as opposed to cause permanent damage. The victims said they were not aware of who might have had an interest in an attack."

Could just be the tuna salad or guacamole dip they had.

The refrigeration is not that reliable these days in Kviv.

Accidental polonium contamination. Very common in that part of the world… did they say his skin started to peel off of his face? Now where have I heard that before?

So now Roman is some sort of powerful person who is being asked to negotiate the end of a war with his russian master??

losers usually start weakineing their demands to make it seem like they are trying to be nice..... losers have no meat at the negotiating table...

Well starstreak is now operational in Ukraine so the Russians are now even more limited with their air attacks, and the ground attacks are virtually stalled so as each day passes Russia’s hands become more and more tied militarily. This is not saying we should trust the Russians but they do have an incentive to cease hostilities before they default on debt. @terr just posted that now foreign currencies aren’t allowed to be withdrawn from banks in any amount so that is telling that the Russians are looking at outflows.

UA needs to ask for Crimea +Donbass + reparations....haggle down to leave Donbass and no Crimea recognition.

You don't understand Russian mentality at all it seems, just try to consider that Russians will not negotiate on Crimea, this will never happen, same goes for Donbass it seems and as for reparations, I don't know, they may negotiate only if sanctions are lifted. Has the US issued reparations to the African Americans yet?

'Why would I tell you!' Biden gets testy when Peter Doocy asks how he'd respond to Putin using chemical weapons

President Joe Biden on Monday got into a testy exchange with Fox News' Peter Doocy when he was asked about how the United States would respond to Russia using chemical weapons in its war against Ukraine.

"When you said that a chemical weapon use by Russia would trigger a response in kind..." Doocy began.

"It would trigger a significant response," Biden replied.

"What does that mean?" Doocy asked.

"Why would I tell you? You've gotta be silly!" Biden shot back.
