I'm not sure why people can't just negotiate sure one side will do better than the other but to save lives , destruction of infrastructure suffering its a no brainer to me .

Tthere was a brief hiatus when Western nations thought Russia fallen in line and their place was to provide cheap commodities for printed money
As Russia demanded some respect, of course US became angry as its international policy doesn't have any option to treat Russia as equal but only as cheap resource provider in global economy
West hypocricy is exposed, everbody knows at any moment he can be sanctioned, his funds can be frozen and at his territory can be used for bloody war unless they fully submit to US will
And nobody likes it so maybe world is awash with oil and commodities but west will not get it cheap anymore
Any thought that Russia is the equal of any of the worlds great democracies is delusional. For example, compare the living standards in any of the Western European country to those of the typical Russian. Russia will never be equal until Russians have to right to criticize their government without being arrested.
You have assumed the U.S. has powers it does not. Russians have an inferiority complex for a very good reason. Their government IS inferior.
Russia tried to demand respect from other nations. Russia hasn't yet learned that respect must be earned, it can't be successfully demanded.
When the Russian people finally rise up and demand that their inalienable rights be respected by their government, then, and only then, will Russia be accepted as an equal.
If you want to see the difference between democracies and autocracies demonstrated, consider how Americans respond to television reporters when asked for their opinion on the President. The American responses will be all over the map but many will not hesitate to freely express their opinion, no matter how negative.
Now consider what would happen under the same circumstances in Russia. Many Russians would be reluctant to express any opinion other than a neutral or complimentary one. They will often say they have no opinion. Russians are free to express negative opinions on anything but the official Russian political position. To any citizen of a democratic country, this common behavior of Russians tells them all they need to know about the prospects for democracy in Russia; thus about the prospects of Russia being respected by the worlds' democracies. Americans respect Russians, they do not respect Russia's autocratic government, nor do they respect Russians acting on behalf of their autocratic government.

This is the attitude of tyrants. It is impossible to earn true respect by pointing a gun at someone. Putin's childish threat to use nuclear weapons is just one of the many reasons he gets no respect. The West does not expect him to use nuclear weapons unless he is truly insane. In that case, it is naturally assumed the Russian military would stop him. The use of a nuclear weapon to attack any NATO country, would prove disastrous for Russia.

In democratic countries, a demented President, does not cause the government to stop working as usual. The President serves at the pleasure of various governmental bodies that have the power to remove him, as do the people. It's a messy process, as are all democratic processes, but the process is there if needed.
