If you don't get HC through your employer you can't afford -- simple as that. The pricing model the insurance companies use guarantees you can't afford it because a group of 100 people gets a different price than a group of 1, or a group of 1 family.
The price to offset risk should be based on the population rather than the individual policy but that basically gets us to the direction we're heading anyway -- socialized medicine.
And then, God forbid you have a heart attack or develop some chronic illness. Then, THEN, if you thought you couldn't afford it before........

There are certainly people who abuse the system. People who would rather spend their money on motorcycles and six packs instead of saving their money in case of a health emergency. But the majority of people that would be helped are in need of help not because they are lazy or incompetent, but because of the circumstances they find themselves in.
Also, that guy who is spending money on motorcycles and six packs likely couldn't afford a major medical procedure even if he didn't buy the motorcycle and six packs.
I wager most of the folks who are commenting in this thread are young and have never had to deal with the real cost of health care...especially with private health insurance.
Even those who are insured, are not fully insured, nor can they afford many of the treatments recommended upon a diagnosis...
This thread reminds me of the chicken hawk republicans who were gung ho on the Iraq war...knowing they or their families would not have to risk their lives in that war...
These people have no problem watching the lives of other people get ruined...
