The Washington Post ran a front page article today on the near panic gripping the party establishment and donor class. It seems the idiot voters do not understand what is best for them and are actually contemplating ignoring the wishes of the party bosses and check writers. The consensus that Trump and Carson would fall away has been replaced by the glum acceptance that it isn't likely to happen.
Even worse, focus group testing of attacks on Trump and Carson have fallen flat. Their voters really just don't care that they might have favored something like socialized medicine, Trump, or had a troubled youth and less than perfect recall of past events, Carson. Trump in particular has responded to attacks with "withering" counterpunches that have given the ultra cautious consultants further pause. He's not really a guy you want to get into an insult contest with, because for him, nothing is off the table. Your shots don't faze his voters but his destroy you. See Jeb!.
The panic level is so high some desperately want to get former candidate Mitt Romney into the race. They have even mapped out a way to wire a convention for him. He isn't interested, so far.
The story lays out the basis for the elites' fear. Trump or Carson might threaten their Senate majority. This is their actual fear. The idea that maybe voters are pissed off by the spectacle of lying senators supinely yielding to obama on issue after issue they had promised to block is not even discussed.
The article hints at but doesn't come out and confirm what Rush has been saying, namely that republican elites would probably prefer Hillary to Trump and certainly to Cruz.
