La Jolla, CA is nice. -- There's a reason it's called or nicknamed 'the Jewel' -- you have to actually visit an area for a while...to really make a comment on it first.
La Jolla has a ritzy, smart, good-looking people, vibrant feel to it.
Del Mar and Encinitas are more normal/tame areas of San Diego. -- nothing really to gawk at...just normal upper middle class areas.
I also like the Coronado area of San Diego...it has a somewhat of a cozy, quiet, secluded, wholesome American feel to it.
I live in San Diego, but not in La Jolla or Coronado -- those are relatively pricey, exclusive areas. (come to think of it...Everywhere in California is rather expensive)
You have to be rich, or well off, to move into the state; if you're moving out...you could buy So much more home elsewhere.

Bird Rock is pretty cool. Only one decent bar in that vicinity though. Can't remember the name of it.
I agree about Downtown LJ being a tourist trap, but hey, I'm from Orlando so I'm used to tourist traps everywhere
Santa Barbara - very, very slow place to me with loads of older tourists. When I was there, the whole area seemed to be dominated by weddings and special events. I was there in the April/May timeframe so maybe that's why.
Del Mar and Encinitas seemed to have more of the blue collar working class, which is fine, but I left there thinking that it was fine to visit but not sure I'd ever want to live there.

All very good points. Funny you mentioned Modesto, I grew up about 20 miles from there outside of Turlock. Only good thing about the Valley was I was close to Bear Valley for skiing. I got out of there when I was 20 and never looked back.
I am very familiar with the burdens CA puts on business. My parents owned a garbage company and I have owned several businesses of my own before concentrating on trading full time. It's not any one thing, it's the combination of the State, City and County making it as hard as possible to get your job done without pulling your hair out.
The main reason I am considering Boise is my brother is there and we trade as a team. While we do that now via Skype, it would be better to open an office and trade in a more professional setting.
Also, California just saw fit to outlaw every single firearm I own. The over regulation of everything is getting extreme.

Agreed -- buttoned-down, expensive, touristy. As to La Jolla -- why not Mission Beach / Pacific Beach instead? Lots of young energy.

Good question and I'll tell you why. My wife and I decided a while back that although we like to party with the best of them, we don't necessarily want to live where all the partying and crazy energy is happening. We recently stayed at the Pacific Terrace Hotel in Pacific Beach, and although it was a fun time right on the boardwalk, I can't say I'd want to live right in the middle of that scene all the time.
It's the same as when we go down to Miami and hang out: We will gladly visit the hotels with all the crazy DJ's and parties happening, but we would never stay the night in those locations. We much prefer to stay in the quieter part of town and visit the crazy locations when we are in the mood.

...Mission Beach and Pacific Beach are kind of cheap, dirty, rundown, stinky, college frat-like places -- and some older hippies too.
Although it's nice to see youthful girls there, I wouldn't want to live there.
