i have shown that the anti usury laws imposed by the church do follow scripture, go back and read my posts

what no one has addressed is why charging intrest today is OK in the eyes god, when the bible says it is not.

again what would you say to someone who had been excomunicated by the church and condemed to hell for doing what we do for a living?

The truth of the matter is that my "religious friends" don't even understand what this public school issue is about. They believe what they believe, and that is in total disregard to the separation of church and state (I guess they have special exceptions to their beliefs in our system). Also, for the most part, a huge percentage of the population actually believes that school vouchers are about evening out the chances for an education. Nothing could be further from the truth. How is $1,100 a year going to benefit a kid from a poor family? That is going to cover the $20k a year for private school? What a joke. School vouchers are about legitimizing prayers in school. It is an issue about subsidizing religious education and nothing more. And nothing less.

Just my opinion of course. I am sure I will get an argument. But I believe I know a bit about this issue. Of course, for those who think I am wrong about this, I would like to hear how an indigent family is going to provide a quality private education for their kids with school vouchers. Why is this an issue backed by the religious right? Ever hear the NAACP clamor for school vouchers? Or the ACLU? Or any public educators? (yeah, I know....competition to public education. Give me a break!)

While the NAACP may not support vouchers, many urban and African-American leaders and organizations have! Milwaukee, as a matter of fact, was one of the leaders in pushing for vouchers, and Representative Polly Williams, who criticized "flaky white liberals" for policies that have held back education in Milwaukee, has been one of the most outspoken proponents for vouchers for about 10 years.

The reason is that it is possible for some poor families to afford private schools (which are NOT normally $20G), especially since many private schools offer partial scholarships. Meanwhile, the public schools are in such disarray. I'm not actually a solid supporter of vouchers, but I am very open minded to them. And I just think you gave an incomplete view (and unfair with the $20g figure).

While I will admit to taking the tuition to an extreme (20k is certainly NOT unrealistic though), I am convinced that apart from a very few opportunities that will avail themselves (via scholarship combined with vouchers), this is not the issue in truth.

If the schools are giving scholarships, then in how many cases will the lack of the school vouchers be deal breakers?

And why are the big proponents the religious right? Is it just coincidence?

I think the lack of vouchers would take many opportunities away from people who would like to send their kids to private school.

Obviously, it is no coincidence that many religious groups support vouchers. Clearly, they see this as a way to encourage more families to send their children to religious schools. However, your suggestion, or at least implication, that it is ONLY the religious orgs that are pushing for this (and that there is no support from any urban and minority groups) is wrong.

Definitely this is a tough issue, given the issue of the separation of church and state. And as someone who does not believe the government should be giving money to religious charitable organizations (as Bush instituted), I will certainly admit this is a tough grey area in my opinion.
 
Wow - surprised this thread is still kicking. Rs7 - how can you think private schools would NOT be better than public schools? For that matter, can you think of anything done by the government that is somehow more cost effective?

If I give you a million dollars, would you be able to make a dollar out of it? You give me all the money we throw at the school systems and I'll have every kid leaving with better education out of junior high than most are getting in college.

And for everyone on the religious warpath, you got it all wrong. This guy is the Way and the Truth!
