A new poll conducted shortly before the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg revealed that an overwhelming majority of U.S. adults of all political stripes supported holding hearings for a nominee if a vacancy opened on the nation's highest bench.

Marquette University released the survey results on Saturday that showed 67% of adults believed the Senate should hold a hearing if a vacancy occurred during 2020's race, with only 32% opposition — and similar strong numbers across Republicans, Democrats, and independents, who supported holding confirmation hearings at 68-31%, 63-37%, and 71-28% respectively. The poll was completed three days before the death of Ginsburg, the 87-year-old liberal icon who was nominated by President Bill Clinton and confirmed in 1993. Ginsburg earned praise from Democrats and Republicans upon news of her death.

Obama tried to slam through Garland but lost because he didn't control the senate. The "McConnell Rule" is actually the Biden Rule and dates back to 1992.

But that didn't matter in 2016 when every democrat was happy to ignore what they said decades earlier to slam through Garland before Obama became a total lame duck.

If you go back far enough you see that Harry Reid used the nuclear option to stop the 60 vote rule on executive and judiciary nominations, an entirely harebrained partisan move, and McConnell being a brilliant tactician saw this move and extended the nuclear option to supreme court candidates. There have been several SCOTUS justices nominated and confirmed in election years by both parties, the so called “Biden Rule” is a ruse and used by both sides to browbeat the opposition, it has no Constitutional basis.

Trump has every right to nominate whoever he wants. It’s the Democrats that can not abide by the laws governing this country. They resort to violence, blackmail, extortion in an attempt to get what they want politically.
