Growing up, most dads were veterans of WWII and/or Korea. My Dad served in both wars. WWII loomed large in our psyches because the older generation had all been affected by it; and they all had their stories.
They all remembered where they were when they heard about Pearl Harbor and they all remembered VE and VJ days. Most of that generation is gone now.
Many today don't realize just how scary those times were. On Dec. 7, 1941, the Germans were at the gates of Moscow and looked unstoppable. They had yet to experience a serious defeat. Now the Japanese were embarking on their series of early victories.
Hindsight tells us how it turned out. At that time it wasn't clear that we could win.
