Programming (in a corporate/professional setup) is one of the crappiest and most horrible jobs you can choose. The level of effort you have to put in and the stress on your physique and psyche is comparable to working on a marine platform. Not just any marine platform but a burning marine platform, because every day if it doesn't already burn in flames, all the shit is a spark away from exploding in your face.

It pays, of course. By far not enough for how much it wears you out and at a level where compensation versus wear are sustainable on the long run.
