What was the unemployment rate at this stage in Reagan's presidency?
Fact is Obama was the better choice over McCain and is proving that still. And from what your side has to offer is still the better choice.
The right would lay off millions from the government payroll and somehow that would decrease unemployment, let GM fail and somehow that would decrease unemployment. The right would give the wealthiest corporations and individuals and mega wealthy children of the rich tax cuts and that will balance the budget.
The right is only concerned with the short term success of big business and the mega wealthy. It's sad to watch the tea baggers work so hard for policies that will doom their children and grandchildren to lower incomes, less safe working conditions, longer hours, less job security. The right is wanting to compete with China by bring our wages more in line with them. If the right wins the presidency and senate it will be the beginning of the end for middle class Americans, too sad.
 
Any discussion about the relative merits of the Democratic tax platform versus the Republican tax platform is essentially meaningless political fluff.

The US has the highest corporate tax rates in the industrialized world, and GE paid no income tax. None. And Obama loves Immelt. Chairs his economic panel.

Back in the late 50's and early 60's the top tax tier was close to 90%, but of course nobody paid it.

When George Soros and Warren Buffet and Steven Speilberg and Barbara Streisand pay income taxes on gross ordinary income with only the standard line item itemized deductions and without the army of CPAs and tax attorneys then Democrats can claim the high ground. Otherwise, go ahead and raise the top tax tier to 75% if it would make you feel any better.

Charles Rangel was very good at handing out tax loopholes and the Democrats had two years of complete legislative and executive control to pass any sort of tax legislation and tax rates they chose. All the limousine liberals will hire their armies of legal tax cheats and keep paying 15% no matter where you put the tax rate.

Flat tax rate on gross income. No exceptions. All other talk is fluff.

If the truth is condescending to you, then you have issues you need to resolve with yourself, not me.

The right would lay off millions? Isn't it possible you're using hyperbole just a bit? Isn't it also possible that there are a ton of folks out there working for the government that do nothing but collect a paycheck, and that the private sector would be better off handling those issues? If the government gets the hell out of a lot of things, private sector will get into it, and there are your jobs.

As for taxes, sure - tax cuts go to those who actually pay taxes. Can't do much about that, my friend. If there was a way to cut ZERO into a smaller number, we could debate it.

You're big government. You remind me of Puerto Rico. The largest employer there is the government. Half of the employees do zilch - the government just employs them because it knows if it doesn't, it'll have 25% unemployment.

That would be a great solution long term IF debt didnt have to be eventually paid. Funny how that pesky thing called "debt" comes up all the time.

Or maybe you would like to explain how you would balance the budget in your socialistic utopia?

The first step in improving the economy is jobs. That's it, very simple. Drastically cutting spending now will do the opposite it will cost Americans jobs. The idea that reducing the government will increase jobs is crazy for right now. Do that when employment is improved, but not now. It is hard to understand the lack of critical thinking on the right.

We need to address the deficit, yes. It's important. But right now, it takes a back seat to jobs. All these cries from the right of 'we're bankrupt!' is just bs and scare tactics. And it should be obvious to any thinking person.
 
getting back to the OP, I don't think a pro-life stance is out of fashion. In fact, I think as people become more educated about how much is going on inside the womb it's more likely that a pro-choice person would become pro-life. Education favors the pro-life movement, but it has to be done with tact and respect, and that's sometimes an issue for people who are (understandably) so passionate about the issue
